Cinecast Episode 250 – The Clip Show

Clip Show! Clip Show! Clip Show! Come celebrate our 250th episode, not with a big bloated Disney epic or a Foreign Language Film Oscar Winner, we put reviews/discussion of John Carter and A Separation on hold to offer you our ‘Greatest Hits Quadruple Live Album.’ If you are a long time listener, you may find many of the bits of the show you love in our compilation. If you are a relatively new listener, there is lots of Cinecast ‘history’ buried in this, our 250th (Spectacular! Spectacular!) episode. Clip Show!

Extra special thanks to Jim Laczkowski for putting together the opening and closing bumper music. Genius! So thank you sir!

As always, please join the conversation by leaving your own thoughts in the comment section below and again, thanks for listening for all these years!

Wow I can’t wait to sink my teeth into this. Just reading the episode timings is making me smile. Plus I’ve never heard any of the earlier stuff, I only started listening about 18 months ago. I must admit, the epic length means that I don’t always catch the shows, but I will make time for this one!

David Brook
Admin

Oh and congratulations guys on reaching 250 episodes!!

Nat Almirall

Has anyone pointed out the resemblance between Matt Gamble and Paul Krugman?

Matt Brown
Admin

Congrats to you fellows from Team Mamo. You beat us to 250 by only 6 episodes, but in terms of run time, you beat us here five years ago.

Sean Patrick Kelly
Guest

Is “Matt defends Blair Witch 2” such a good clip that it had to be in the clip show twice?

Jim Laczkowski
Guest

Yes, Sean. Yes it such a good clip IMHO

Jim Laczkowski

Congratulations Andrew, Matt and Kurt. It was a blast listening to several older episodes this past weekend. Here’s to 250 more!

Mark Stevens

I should have suggested a clip montage of Kurt’s massacred pronunciations of names and simple words.
(Somebody tell this fellow how the word “put” is pronounced!–NOT like the final strokes on a golf hole.)

Favorites–
“Fa-seel” (facile)
“Gra-veed-us” (gravitas)
and just recently
“Tack-i-turn” (taciturn)

Has Kurt learned English as a second language or was he taught by a sadistically perverse phonics teacher?

Kurt Halfyard
Admin

English is my first language, but I’m speaking Canadian English (yea, badly perhaps, throw on hyperbole, hubris, and finagle to the pile) I’ve got epitome and niche (neesh, not NIT-CH) correct though.

Where are you from Mark? What Country/Region?

Mark Stevens
Guest

Just kidding, Kurt. Actually, the “put” stuff is my favorite drinking game while listening to the podcast.

I’m in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where, lord knows, there are enough people with pronunciational shortcomings.

(By the way, and it probably won’t come up again as the gentleman is no longer with us, It’s Ben Guh-zah-ruh, accent on the second syllable.)

I hope Willem enjoyed JOHN CARTER as much as I did. Be well.

Mark

As a person who learned Canadian English as a second language I think this is more of a Newfoundland thing than a Canadian thing. You tend to favour stressing the second syllable (especially in 2 syllable words), that’s how we end up with Affleck (a FLECK) and Brolin (bro LIN).

Jandy Hardesty
Admin

How do you pronounce facile if not “fa-seel”? That seems pretty accurate to me.

toro913
Guest

The other way is fa – syle, stress on the first syllable. We usually get two pronunciations when a word is directly carried over from French, the original French pronunciation is kept and a new English one is created. The same as visage, vi – ZAJ and VI – zeg.

Mark Stevens
Guest

Sorry, Jandy. If you tell me “fa-seel” is a Canadian pronunciation, I’ll accept that, but resign yourself to getting a smirk or a chuckle down here when you say that.

“Gra-veed-us” and “tack-i-turn remain outright hilarious.

Jandy Stone
Guest

I’m not Canadian, Mark. I’m as Midwestern American as you could ask for. But I’ve never heard anyone pronounce “facile” any other way – but maybe I’ve never heard many people pronounce it at all (most people just say “easy”), and four years of French in high school and college took its toll on my own phonetic interpretation. Because “fa-seel” is correct in French.

I do agree with you on the other two. I pronounce them “grah-vi-TAHS” and “TASS-i-turn”. I should really learn IPA so I can write pronunciation properly.

Kurt Halfyard
Admin

Keep in mind that Quebec french is very different than Parisian French. And that the english language is very malleable (MAL-EE-A-BELL!)

PotAYto, PoTATo (or Dan Quayle style, PotaTOE)

Nat Almirall

Who says “po-TAT-oh”? (“po-TAH-to”?). Orson Welles needs to come on the program and put the smack down.

Kurt Halfyard
Admin

We would love to have Orson Welles on the program. Someone set that up….via medium or something.

I asked my husband (from North Dakota) how he pronounces “facile” – with no context as to why I was asking or how I pronounce it – and he also says “fa-seel.”

Nat Almirall

Gotta say, as ranking professional editor here, it’s “fa-sill.”

Jandy Hardesty

I’m gonna start pronouncing it “fa-chi-lay” from now on.

Isn’t there a band called Benna Fleck and the Flecktones 🙂

Kurt Halfyard

I love Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. I’m sure that is the source of my pronunciation folly on that one!

for so reason the download i got was only 6 and half mins. ive redownloaded it and it still showing 6 and half mins. what gives.

Kurt

you are 100% certain that it is not 6.5 hours? The whole file should be somewhere around 260Mb.

vaughn

yes it seems to be that audio patch that andrew posted. it runs for only 5 mins and 40 seconds.

Andrew, thanks for fixing the itunes feed. I can finally download. In principal, I’ve always been opposed to clip shows, but I am definitely looking forward to this one

David Brook

I was lucky to have a day with the office all to myself and lots of basic paperwork/emailing stuff and no editing to do so managed to get through the whole clip show in one go.

Nice work, it was great to sit through. I loved comparing the lonely, slightly awkward 1st ever episode to the epic rant section.

Even though I’ve missed a handful of episodes over the last year and I only started listening about 18 months ago I was surprised that I had actually heard a lot of this stuff, which makes me feel like I’ve been listening to the right episodes. Still fun to revisit too.

Keep it going guys. My podcast is only on episode 23 after a year and a bit and it’s still a bit messy. I hope it grows to be as memorable and enjoyable as yours after 6 years.

DavidM

Oh lord, the Blade Runner argument: dying here. To be fair though, it is one instance where Mr Gamble’s volcanic exasperation is justified, imo.

Facile : fa-syle is the standard pron in the UK btw.

Here’s to the next 250.

Rick Vance
Guest

Can’t wait. Good thing I am able to listen at work or I would never get through something like this.

Schizopolis
Guest

Congrats on 250!

Andrew was right. After listening to the “Deckard is a replicant” and “Karate Kid is promoting communism” clips, I really started to dislike Gamble lol. I even had to take breaks from listening a few times. Obnoxious overload! Still enjoy Gamble’s rants…just not on a highlight reel.

Poor Kurt for being Gamble’s whipping boy. I really felt for him. For the record, I agree with Kurt. I prefer Deckard as human. The director or creator is never the final authority on their art. Luckily, Deckard as a human or a replicant in the storyline is subjective. So I choose the story of Deckard as a human that falls in love with a replicant and becomes enlightened from his encounter with Roy. As opposed to a cerebral gotcha ending of him as a replicant. This adds an unnecessary layer while at the same time killing the viewers’ emotional/empathetic connection to Deckard. If Gamble disagrees, then someone should tell him that his girlfriend is actually a replicant with implanted memories and an expiration date and see how he feels lol jk

Schizopolis
Guest

Correction: I mean the director or creator is never the final authority on the interpretation of their art.

Rick Vance
Guest

I much prefer it as a replicant and the fact that Director thinks that he is a replicant and the actor thinks he is Human is kinda fitting for the story if that is the case isn’t it?

Rick Vance
Guest

Listening to that whole thing in one shot was interesting. A few things kept coming up.

Andrew you are really the mediator in between the egos of Kurt and Matt right until you have an opinion that doesn’t make sense or jive when the entire thing goes off the rails (the Game of Thrones bit is the prime example). Kurt is more and more becoming the old man yelling at the kids on his lawn, to the point where I can still not believe you enjoy Scott Pilgrim Kurt. Matt as overblown and hyperbolic as he gets at least is always consistent with that. Also probably the only film person I have ever heard talk about comics with any degree of knowledge that extends beyond what comes to the screen or is being optioned.

There were many of a times where I caught myself shaking my head or attempting to pull hair at conversations that not only were taking place in the past but most of which I had already heard.

Jericho Slim
Guest

Great show. Some comments/observations:

1. Funniest line goes to Andrew: What would happen if you drove through Ethiopia with a truck full of bananas and grain? What the eff . . . !!? I am still laughing at that line – it is so stupid/brilliant.

2. Matt: you love him if he is arguing for your opinion of a film and you hate him if he is arguing against your opinion.

3. Kurt: It’s hilarious trying to pinpoint the moment where Kurt decides that he is actually going to vigorously defend a movie that Matt is thrashing. It is just as hilarious when he arrives at the decision that defending it to Matt is of no use. The time between those 2 decisions reflects just how much he loves the movie.

Kurt
Guest

Just listened to the Episode26 segment. Wow, it was indeed a tentative meeting of voices!

This stood out: In the first segment of the first time I was co-hosting the show, I predict that that I’ll probably interrupt him a lot, and I then go on to apologize in advance for it. So, Andrew, here is to 6 years of interrupting! Oi!

Bob Turnbull
Admin

Hey, I made it on a clip show! Awesome! Granted, the only reason I did was the Matt/Kurt brouhaha over “The Prestige”, but I’ll take what I can get. I disagree with the statement that Matt delivered a “smackdown” though – I’m fine with him not liking it, but I don’t think any of his reasons really countered our reasons for liking it. He had a personal dislike of the characters, actors, etc. which is fine, but it’s hardly a complete rejection of our points (OK, mostly Kurt’s points). Not that I want to hear the arguments again though!

I loved Willem’s segment. It’s great hearing kids work their way through to explaining their opinions. I also loved Kurt correcting Andrew about Empire preceding Toy Story 2 (even though it was obvious Andrew meant that as a joke).

The best thing about Cinecast is how much enjoyment you guys get recording the show. Whether it’s an hour or 4 hours (and I really enjoyed our 4 hour show that covered TIFF10), it’s obvious you guys are just having fun talking.
