Mamo #244: Event Cinema

Will theatrical moviegoing die out, or evolve into something new? We talk to special guest stars Ned Loach and Robert Gontier from 360 Screenings, a new screening series coming to Toronto this spring, which will unite cinema and live performance to create a new level of immersion in the film’s story.

  1. Awesome. I had actually heard about Secret Cinema’s Blade Runner screening, which looked absolutely amazing event:

    The only thing that I ever experienced something on that level is a at San Diego Comic Con. There are fan screenings, where people are dressing up as characters and having fun and almost putting that kind of experience on their own for everyone else. Then you have movies & tv shows that studios are trying to promote their own properties, with a bar looking like the inside of Tron Legacy with people dressed as characters from that movie (the year before at Comic Con fans went to Flynn’s Arcade). However, often the studio run ones don’t include a screening, as they are trying to promote an upcoming movie or tv show.

    “I don’t know how many films happen in Toronto…”
    SCOTT PILGRIM SCREENING INSIDE OF LEE’S PALACE!! That would be something incredibly close to the example of Ghostbusters inside of the firehouse. However, that screening might have to be mid-day to get out of the way of any concert… unless there’s a Scott Pilgrim-related concert done later that night. Still with so many Toronto landmarks in that movie and people who were based off those characters still living in Toronto, I think you could reach a level being inside the movie like nothing else.

    I will also comment that while the secret part of the screening is cool, in that people don’t know what they are going to see and guessing, there is also something missing when it is known. Like the Scott Pilgrim thing, I would pay probably more than $60 to see such a screening. People who might travel to Toronto to see such a 360 screening of Scott Pilgrim.

    Also going back to San Diego Comic Con when I saw screenings there with a chunk of the audience dressed up as characters from the movie. Basically, when it’s known you can get more audience participation and involvement outside of what the organizers had planned.
