Cinecast Episode 249 – Fun and Lovable Evil

What is Gamble’s next door neighbor up to? Matt grades a special homework assignment this week and a variety of scenarios are proposed and considered in detail to the point where one member of the cinecast breaks out a pretty spectacular Ted Levine impression. Also theatrical reviews of Canadian Hockey Hoser-y happens in Goon. And the found-footage mega-party, Project X, not only brings the age-divide into stark relief but also results in an overall missed opportunity. The Watchlist covers a lot of ground: Robert Bresson, Danny Boyle, Errol Morris, Neil LaBute, Paul Greengrass, Nevaldine/Taylor, Martin Scorsese, Tim Roth, and delightful gay men. Onward!

I saw MARNIE when it played at the Bell Lightbox recently. Pretty good film. It’s also interesting to note that there was a letter from Hitchcock in the Grace Kelly exhibition, where he talks about having started filming Marnie and how it starred Connery who was “this chap from the James Bond films.” (that’s more a paraphrase than quote).

Also, I haven’t been listening long enough to be able to suggest anything for the clip show, so I will sit this week’s homework out.

After that scathing review of PROJECT X, this is all the more surprising – http://www.firstshowing.net/2012/warner-bros-planning-another-huge-party-with-project-x-sequel/

The clip show requires:
1.The Prestige debate between Gamble and Kurt (2 A drunk Kurt calling people idiots for liking Transformers 2 (3 Andrew stalking a girl in the fair (4 the it is all a dream debate in Scott Pilgrim (5 Kurt missing the guy storyline in Miler Crossing

Always been partial to the bitch-out slap-down on Kick-Ass. Gamble and Kurt going at it on Captain America is baller classic, too. Gamble’s review of Monster Dog (I had just seen it and rviewed it on our podcast, too, and thought it was an odd coincidence). I also remember some retardedly fascinating segments of surreality with Kurt and Andrew and LOST

(6. Andrew James lovefest for the Gosling. (7. Matt Gamble vs Kurt Halfyard on the propaganda elements of Karate Kid Remake and Red Dawn. (8. Kurt’s outburst on The Natural

I would think me insulting Rian Johnson would be a must.

You’re a bad man, Gamble. Rian was an absolute class act for taking your shit.

You could probably fill (and should) a good half hour of the clip show with homoerotic banter.

For the record, Andrew, my last name is pronounced “EL-muhrr-el.”

And Gamble completely missed the point of Project X.

Andrew’s defense of boxed wine would be nice. That is like a three episode string.

Regarding your discussion about Project X and how it should’ve been done as a ‘real’ frat boy documentary…it’s been done!

Todd Philips directed a documentary for HBO on frat houses. It never aired and he was accused of staging elements. It’s available in full on YouTube:

Kurt has a nice explanation of getting screwed with ‘in a good way’ during the review of Shutter Island (#156) at around the 12 minute mark – made me laugh!

Having heard some of what Andrew is cooking up for the clip show, in particular, some of the more homoerotic moments on the show, all I can say is that you guys are in for a treat.

“…. in particular, some of the more homoerotic moments on the show”

Some of it is like Ronin,
Some of it is like bonin’

That might be our show title, Goon. Thanks for that.

I know I am way behind here, but the Project X discussion in this episode was fantastic. Brilliant review and surrounding discussion. Really enjoyed that and felt compelled to comment about it.

I liked Project X. To me, it was just an update on Weird Science, and the second half had this kind of fever dream thing going that I appreciated.

I just though of this, but the third act was kind of Sunshine – like, so maybe Andrew won’t like it.
