• Trailer: Kill List

A film that polarized a good bunch of the Row Three (and The Substream) crowd at TIFF this year. Kill List is an odd beast, and while this trailer emphasizes the ominous, there is a fair bit of off-kilter British humour and crime/mystery all thrown together with a decidedly Wicker Man cult angle. Ben Wheatley (Down Terrace) is one of the most interesting genre directors out there, and he delivers with this one, at least in my opinion.

The trailer is tucked under the seat.

Loved Kill List – easily one of the best midnight films I’ve seen at AFI Fest. Though they also played Headhunters this year, which was awesome (and Julia’s Eyes last year). But for sheer adrenaline WTFery combined with slow burn atmosphere, Kill List was great fun. Not sure the plotting totally made sense toward the end, but it has such energy through that section, it doesn’t matter that much.

This trailer does a pretty good job of getting the mood across without spoiling very much, too.

I would have reviewed the film, but it was the very tail end of TIFF and I was kind of too burned out to walk the delicate line in how to review the film.

Also, it was kinda cool to have the director and lead actress of Dogtooth/ALPS sitting in front of me for the Ryerson Midnight screening. Ah! Film fests.

I didn’t review it because I couldn’t figure out how to say anything substantive without revealing the twist. It’s definitely one that’s best gone into without knowing almost anything about it.

Exactly. That being said, I kind of knew most of what happened as a result of conversations with the director when I interviewed him (For Down Terrace, interview is here) at Fantasia in 2010. Of course that text never made it into the transcription, but I could guess from his descriptions and intent (and enthusiasm!) at the time that this was going to be pretty special.

Plus, from the mood it was setting I always knew which way it would head by the end. I loved it too – expect to see it very high up my top 10 of the year list.
