When it comes to Georges Franju’s brilliant 1960s horror Eyes Without a Face there are literally dozens of images I could have chosen. But in the end I went with the one above of the main character – the daughter of a brilliant surgeon who he tries to “fix” – as she wears the eerily iconic mask to cover up her injury. I love the way the woman is gently tilting up her face to check on her and the way the girl stares blankly back at her wearing that almost inexplicably creepy blank mask. A haunting image from a haunting film.

I need to see this film so, so badly. I’ll definitely have to try to get to it this month. Thanks for the reminder!
Me too, it’s been on my ‘to watch’ list for years, but it always passes me by. I should kick it up my LoveFilm list.
Kick it up the list both of you! I can’t imagine you won’t like it…Great choice Ross – that mask is actually quite horrific as it removes all traces of emotion from her face.
I really have no excuse, as it’s on HuluPlus here in the States, which I can watch right on my TV. No excuse. I’ll have to sneak it into our October horror lineup. Not tonight, though, tonight is Carrie.
Definitely, Jandy and David, see this movie ASAP. Brilliantly creepy and haunting but also quietly emotional and moving. A nice companion piece to two other creepy horrors which came out in the same year – Psycho and Peeping Tom.
@Jandy – Carrie is on my list of shame… *cowers in the corner*
Mine, too, Ross (re: Carrie), and we didn’t get to it last night after all. Trying for Thursday now.
@Jandy – Oh so I’m not the only person who hasn’t seen it?
I know of it, specific scenes and stuff – it’s pretty hard not to – but never actually sat down and watched it. I’m not a fan of the book despite my otherwise Stephen King fandom. Maybe it speaks way more to female readers, I dunno.
Also, on Eyes Without a Face again, it will make you never ever want to get plastic surgery
