  • Trailer for much delayed Margaret reveals all

    0

There are films that sit on the shelf before being rescued, and then there are films that are simply dumped to DVD after a certain point. But rare is the story of Margaret, a film that never even made it to the shelf because the director couldn’t find the film in the editing room. Want to know why a film starring Matt Damon, Mark Ruffalo and Anna Paquin was delayed for more than five years before being released? Director Kenneth Lonergan (You Can Count on Me) spent a ridiculously lengthy stint in the edit bay (who does he think he is, Terrence Malick?) before the financiers and production companies started filing law suits. This of course, only delayed the film even longer.

One has only to look at the trailer to know that this film is going to be a train wreck along the lines of Nothing Is Private (Kurt’s Review).

A 17-year-old New York City high-school student feels certain that she inadvertently played a role in a traffic accident that has claimed a woman’s life. In her attempts to set things right she meets with opposition at every step. Torn apart with frustration, she begins emotionally brutalizing her family, her friends, her teachers, and most of all, herself. She has been confronted quite unexpectedly with a basic truth: that her youthful ideals are on a collision course against the realities and compromises of the adult world.

The shockingly over-blown trailer is tucked under the seat.

In order for a sports film to become transcendent, it must seamlessly blend the emotion and physicality of the sport with the heart and soul of the athletes themselves. I am not sure that I could have written a more cliché sentence to introduce my thoughts, yet I am equally unsure that it is possible to provide thoughtful analysis of something as grounded in clichés as sports without delving into the metaphorical. Few sports films accomplish this, choosing to focus too much on either the person or the event and failing to enthrall the viewer. In reality, such a film must make us love or hate the athlete so much so that we carry our emotions into the competition, creating an actual rooting interest in a decidedly unreal event.

Rocky is such a film. Raging Bull is such a film. The Wrestler is such a film. And Warrior is such a film.

  • The Year’s Just Getting Started: Most Anticipated Movies Still To Come

    16

Summer is no more. Gone are 2011′s big summer blockbusters and as much as I enjoyed them (the likes of Super 8, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and the last Harry Potter flick really impressed) now is the time when the heavy hitter, Oscar-ish films start to hit screens. The serious films we can all really sink our teeth into.

Since there’s a lot of noteworthy films still to come out between now and the end of the year (although some won’t hit screens in my British neck of the woods until early January/February next year) I thought I’d make up a list of what I’m most looking forward to checking out before year’s end, from 15 on down to 1.

I decided in order to qualify the films have to have a theatrical release scheduled (i.e. festival showings don’t count) somewhere in the world, whether that be in the US, the UK or anywhere else.

So without further ado, let’s get to the list, shall we?
