• Want to see the short version of Fincher’s Dragon Tattoo film?

There is no doubt that this nearly four minute trailer is assembled together with artistry, rhythm, and care. But is it necessary or reasonable to cram so much of the actual movie into its advertisement? Is there not a better way to ‘sell’ this product to a group of people enthusiastic about the novel (or the Swedish films) as well as people who know nothing about them?

I cry foul, or at least extraneous excess, on this. The pertinent question being, what is the compelling reason for a four minute trailer for any film?

The new Girl With A Dragon Tattoo trailer is tucked under the seat.

As great as it is – as you say great rhythm and general artistry – I don’t see the point of putting so much in there. I have read all the books and seen the original films so it doesn’t spoil anything for me (the reason I allowed myself to even watch it) but for people not in the know it spoils a good chunk of the film. Doesn’t the film have enough already their to sell it without showing so much?

We already read the book and/or seen the Swedish films. What is there to spoil?

Four minutes isn’t a trailer, it’s a short film. Not watching it on principle, even though I know the story cold. I hate this “show everything” trend.

I was watching trailers online the other day and stopped halfway through the one for Dream House, which I’d been kind of curious to see, because it was revealing too much. Then it played before Drive in the theatre. ARGH. No escape.

I hear you, Jandy. I just made the exception because I know exactly what happens (it doesn’t look like Fincher/Zaillian are changing a thing, story wise). But generally I hate trailers that give away everything. I have purposefully not watched the Contagion trailer because of this (and the Dream House one, come to think of it). I caught a bit of luck yesterday: I was seeing Warrior and while I was in the bathroom before the movie started the trailer showed for Contagion – by luck I managed to miss it ;)

I haven’t read the books or seen the Swedish movies, so I’m not watching this.

It’s strange how the previous trailer was so damn good, in showing quick flashes of the movie that you got the feel of it without being able to follow much what was going on. That first trailer is *exactly* what I want from a trailer and will sell me on a movie, while this new one going on the description of people who have watched it is *exactly* what I don’t want from a trailer.
