Wow has it seriously been over half a year since we last had a trailer for Gus Van Sant’s latest, and the film hasn’t made it into the cinema yet? Restless is getting released in the USA on September 16th and yes, here is the second trailer for the quirky looking film (Mia Wasikowska as the Manic Pixie Dream Girl?) about a terminally ill teenage girl who falls for a boy who likes to attend funerals and their encounters with the ghost of a Japanese kamikaze pilot from WWII. Imaginary Friends, Ethereal dying girlfriends, a riff on the soundtrack of Badlands, earnest medical melodrama. My head just exploded with twee, but I still want to see this. (It will still likely be better than Good Will Hunting…)
The trailer is tucked under the seat.

I wasn’t aware Mia Wasikowska was in this… high on my to watch list.
I’m kinda stoked for this one because I’ve enjoyed the majority of Van Sant’s work. I’m also growing to love Mia W more and more. Ever since I saw her in the HBO show In Treatment, I’ve grown to really enjoy her screen presence (although I will probably NEVER see Alice in Wonderland). It helps that I’m a huge fan of her Mia Farrow in Rosemary’s Baby-style haircut here.
Hopefully this is up there with good Van Sant (Gerry, Elephant) and not bad Van Sant (Finding Forrester, Even Cowgirls Get The Blues).
PS I don’t think Good Will Hunting is a terrible movie, but I also don’t think it deserves all the praise it got upon its release. I liked it just fine, but I’m still waiting for the release of the sequel… Hunting Season.
Applesauce, bitch!
Reminds me I want to watch “The Kids are All Right” again.
PS – Not to be confused with the The Who doc, “The Kids are Alright.”
I only mildly enjoyed Kids Are All Right but it was mainly for Annette Bening & Mark Ruffalo. The acting by the two kids was just… all right. I might rewatch it again but I’m definitely in the “overrated” camp for that film.
Ruffalo is the Fuckin’ Man.
(This will show up as a Cinecast Episode title at some time in the future, I assure you…that is after we work our way out of the ‘female body function theme’ we seem to have going at the moment…)
You Can Count On Me = still Ruffalo’s best performance & one of my favorite films
Jim – agreed.
For me, without a doubt, Ruffalo’s best performance is in IN THE CUT. Riveting.
He is 10 kinds of awesome in a supporting role in COLLATERAL as well…
