• Rise of the Planet of the Apes gets a second trailer.

    Back in April, Kurt posted the first full-length trailer for the prequel, reboot, whatever you want to call it Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Today, the studio released a new trailer, which includes some footage from the original trailer, but gives off a slightly different vibe with the new footage. I am still unsure of what I think about this project.

    Check it out for yourself. What do you think of this film? Is there any interest out there for this or did the 2001 Tim Burton remake leave too bad of a taste in the mouths of everyone?

    Wow, suddenly Weta looks to have undertaken a task they weren’t prepared for. This looks like shit. But hey, anything to piss on the grave of Heston; I approve.

  2. I think this looks defiantly fantastic. I love weta’s work, and I love the acting on display here by caesar. I cannot wait to see this in theatres so I can erase the painful memory of Burton’s bulljive. This feels substantial and epic to me.

    I preferred the first trailer, but I still think this looks like it could be decent. I thought the early shots of Caesar looked a bit dodgy, but the later ones as he gets more human look great in my opinion.

    @Matthew Price
    Weta has done some really good work in the past, but it doesn’t excuse the terrible display of work in this trailer.
    The physical animation might be good, but the visual effects look like sore thumbs. I’m getting tired of the criteria for peoples’ set standards; “If it’s done by Weta, it must be good.” This looks like shit – FACT.

    I think it looks fine, yet James Marsh’s Project Nim (one of the best documentaries of this year, btw) looks to be infinitely more entertaining as a story – and a film – over Rise of the Planet of the Ape (and the title stinks too)

  6. Dan says:

    Oh Gil,
    I think it looks great – FACT.

  7. Gil says:

    @Dan You’re telling me that when Franco reaches in to the UPS box for the chimp, it actually looks like Franco’s physical plane of existence can truly reach or cross paths with the digital realm of the chimp’s? That close up of its face when its at the table, that shot of its finger flipping the page on a book, those all look terrible.

  8. David Brook says:

    I agree about the UPS box – the young ape shots look really fake, but don’t you think the emoting of the adult Caesar is pretty damn lifelike?

  9. @Gil Your opinion (and in the realm of suspension of disbelief, an opinion is all it ever can be) is not FACT. I continue to think this looks fantastic, TO ME.

    I also care less about the photo realism of this and more about the acting. I don’t need to know that something’s real to be moved by it. I’m pretty sure the muppets don’t look very “real”, but I’m invested in them emotionally. Screw real, I signed up for drama.

    I remember seeing the first trailer but I don’t remember anything about it. Unlikely this trailer will stick in the long term. Meh.
