Cinecast Episode 214 – I Hate that I Know That

We start things off simple. No Kurt. Just some Pirates and Priests. With unpleasantness out of the way, Kurt jumps in with both feet for a indie post-apocalyptic film out of Toronto, a re-evaluation of Inglorious Basterds and Tarantino’s career. Trains and Toni Collette keep the conversation chugging along and with Gamble here, “Game of Thrones” is sort of unavoidable. We all revel in the love for Rip Torn and South Korea before rounding everything out with a talk about sequels that are crazier than a rat in a tin shithouse (ala Caddyshack II and Gremilns II). Nobody dies.

There’s no way POTC4 is better than 3. And I hated part 3.

The two aren’t even comparable, regardless of one’s thoughts on part 3. Verbinski is a director. Rob Marshall is a dance instructor.

Hehe. I’m on board with Matt (having not seen Pirates 3 or Piarates 4) in that Verbinski is a director that I’ll watch whatever he makes, whereas Rob Marshall’s films are more or less skippable each time out.

I’m afraid that since pirates has made some bank that studios will continue to give Marshall projects he’s not qualified for.

I live in fear of that exact thing, especially vis a vis Pirates 5.

Can’t wait for PotC 5, 6 ,7, 8…. Good fun popcorn flicks.

In terms of directing PotC 3 & 4 are completely different but the writing for both are similar and share the same problems. Bloated, lots of exposition, & little characterization.

Rob Marshall and Johnny Depp are talking about remaking The Thin Man. I shudder at the thought.

I agree with Matt about how awesome Game of Thrones is. I’m loving this show. I was on board since the first episode, but admittedly the first couple of shows were exposition heavy, out of necessity probably. But the show has quickly found it’s rhythm, in my opinion, and these last few eps have me beyond invested . The last few shows had this swift momentum to them where shit just builds and builds until I’m on the edge of my seat, thoroughly entertained. And these cliffhanger/stinger endings aren’t making the week long waits between episodes easy (lending argument for Kurt’s practice of waiting until whole seasons/series are available for mainlining). That cliffhanger with Peter Dinklage at the inn on the road was intense, man. If you sign up for HBOgo, you get an early preview of episode 7, which has a killer ending scene as well.

“What’s in the box?! What’s in the box?!” I was yelling this in my head right before your burst out yelling it. Good on you Kurt. I live for moments like these on podcasts such as your own.

Rob Marshall, mmmm….blink and you’ll miss the good bits!

Rob Marshall and Johnny Depp and the ‘The Thin Man’ Jandy? Mmmm….will keep my eyes open for this. Scary, very scary indeed!
