• Second Trailer for Richard Ayoade’s Submarine Hits

A few of us around the third row caught Richard Ayoade’s Submarine at TIFF, and it seems those that did all enjoyed it. It’s tough to avoid Wes Anderson comparisons judging by the marketing so far released, and that doesn’t really change with the second trailer that just dropped, which adds a level of self-characterization through writing that I quite like to the already-established quirky coming-of-age tale. I personally can’t wait until this hits US shores on June 3rd.

Based on the novel by Joe Dunthorne, Submarine follows one 15 year old boy who must fight to save his mother from the advances of a mystic, and simultaneously lure his girlfriend in to the bedroom armed with only a vast vocabulary and near-total self-belief. His name is Oliver Tate.

What do you think? Did you catch the film during its successful festival run? Are you excited to see it in theatrical release? Or have you had enough of these quirky teenage films to do you for a while?

It’s getting a one-night-only screening at my local cinema on Tuesday, so I’m going to try and catch it although it’s on the same night as Cave of Forgotten Dreams which is also a one-off. Which should I watch!! A couple of friends of mine hated Submarine, but they’re generally overly critical and don’t always share my tastes so I’m still very interested.

Cave of Forgotten Dreams in 3D? I’d say maybe catch that if so, as it’ll make more of a difference seeing it in theatres vs. DVD should you not get another theatrical chance at them. It’s easily one of the better uses of 3D and worth seeing that way.

But I haven’t seen Submarine – someone who’s seen both could recommend better.

Yes, in 3D. It would make more sense to catch that in a theatre I guess.

The director was awesome on Kermode’s show; completely self-depricating to the point of being awkward. Made me want to see this film, so I hope it shows up around here.

I don’t think I could take him seriously in person as I know him best from Garth Merenghi’s Darkplace:
