Cinecast Episode 208 – It’s Gonna Be Ass-Tastic!

Welcome to another edition of the Cinecast, wherein the boys talk a little Joe Wright and Super-Spy-Assassins with the weekend release of Hanna. There is no Gamble on the show today, but in order to properly plumb the depth and nuance of Your Highness, we bring in a mystery guest. Then it is on to Kurt’s 3 days in Asheville, NC watching action films and stunt folks from around the world ply their trade at ActionFest. A recap of some of the highlight titles (from Bangkok stunt-reel filmmaking to white knuckle mountain climbing thrillers and Mixed Martial Arts Kumite) along with plans to revisit next year. DVD and netflix picks round out a show that is on-target and efficient, but a tad on the foul-tongued side. Fair warning.

David mentioned the accents in the other thread, I don’t know, to me the funny accents thing is something you find in Bond films and I half suspect Joe Wright was playing with sound in Hanna right down to off-kilter accents. It can’t be a coincidence that everyone in Hanna has an accent, and an accent different then their native tongue.

Funny Andrew mentions a phone ringing becoming part of score… I didn’t quite notice the part in the scene where it was an actual phone ringing but I do remember the score sounding like a cellphone going off because for awhile I thought it was someone in the audience.

I rewatched Atonement last week and stand by everything positive about it. It is steeped in genre like Hanna, particularly the scenes of the war. They are highly romanticized, but no different to me then Pride and Prejudice in this regard (There are those that will snicker at Mr Darcy walking across the mist-lain hills of the finale, and there are those that appreciate it on its own terms). The single take scene is better than I remembered, sorry John. It is how out of place that is the problem, but the scene itself has a nice rhythm to it and is visually mighty impressive.

good ep, saving the first half hour for when I finally catch Hanna later this week (have too many rentals to go see a theater flick).

Thinking this (and FilmRot) are best when the shows clock in around 2 hours and small change.

Kurt, your shot at Matt at the end of the show was pretty great. I now expect him to come back at you full-force on the next show!

I took a shot at Matt? I must be doing it unconsciously at this point? Can you refresh my memory?
