  1. Rod says:

Oh, and I thought it was overrated. Pretty standard for a western, didn’t really have a lot to say. I thought it was one of the Coen’s weaker films.

  2. Mary Claire Anderson says:

true grit. haillee should have gotten the oscar.

  3. Kurt says:

    The original True Grit?

    • Andrew James says:

Rod. I agree. The strength of the movie was the acting. I was disappointed not to see much of Coen’s classic and original dialogue.

And the removal of the shotgun in the final showdown still upsets me.

  4. Henrik says:

I think this was great. On par with Fargo and No Country For Old Men, the other 2 good Coen Bros movies (:D).

  5. Kurt says:

I think there is plenty of one-offs about the casual racism of the heroes (how Rooster (and the hangman) both treat native Indians in tiny ‘scene flourishes’ over the course of the film. I also dug the classic movie-myth making, the final-ride, the strange-hard-to-get-a-read-on Texas Marshall played by Matt Damon. There is too much to love in this film to simply dismiss as a play-by-play remake.

Josh Brolin’s essay of the moron/scoundrel is fantastic and rather understated in a film of otherwise ‘big’ performances.

And yea, the girl is GREAT.

  6. Kurt, to add to your praise, I absolutely loved the scene where Rooster and the girl came across the strange trapper during their travels. The oddball conversation felt very much like a Coen moment and it really added to the overall world that they had built. Definitely up there among the favorite Coen films for sure!

  7. John Allison says:

This is the new True Grit and yes I really dug it.

Henrik: Have you seen Miller’s Crossing. It is still my favourite of the Coens

  8. Kurt says:

Henrik will loathe MILLER’S CROSSING, because of its ironic approach to examining the human condition. It’s far more genre-posturing, but deep down there is some interesting stuff in there, albeit that is not exactly what is foremost on the films brain.

    I love this film.

  9. Henrik says:

Not a big Coen Bros. fan, so haven’t felt tempted to go back and check out earlier stuff. I don’t even keep up with the stuff they release now.
