Welcome to ROUND TWO of the RowThree March Madness pool! We’ve got four divisions of contenders looking to advance to the next round (Note: there is a fifth set of brackets we’re calling the Consolation Division – a group of 16 directors we really wanted to see compete but weren’t quite “worthy” of the big dance). It’s up to you to decide who advances. Look through each bracket within all five divisions and make your choice. After a few days the polls will close and we’ll see who advances to the next round. There can be only one victor.
So not a whole lot of surprises coming out of round one… but there were a couple. Fourteenth seed, Steven Soderbergh, quite handedly took out Mr. Citizen Cane himself, Orson Welles. Then there is the war of the Italians really heating up. Sergio Leone in the twelve spot took out Antonioni (5). Can he continue the upset streak against another Italian director in Frederico Fellini? There are some interesting match-ups taking place in this second round: Spielberg vs Polanski, Hitchcock vs The Coens, Fincher vs Gilliam, Scorsese vs Mr. Charles Chaplin and probably the ultimate war of weird: Lynch vs Herzog (a match made in heaven!). So a possibility of the two Davids meeting up in round three.
Over in the NIT division Stephen Frears really seems to want that consolation trophy as he took out the #2 havyweight, Joel Schumacher. So then it should be cinch for him to beat George Romero right?… RIGHT? Meanwhile, though it pains us to see Mike Leigh out of the running so quickly, it will be interesting so see if Jarmusch can upset Michael Mann to advance to round three.
Things are heating up! Enjoy and let the voting continue…

Fellini vs. Leone – ARGH – chose Fellini because he has more films I’ve seen and loved – I’ve only seen the Man with No Name trilogy of Leone’s.
Bergman vs. Wong – had to choose Bergman, but gorram it, do I love the few Wong Kar Wai films I’ve seen.
Scorsese vs. Chaplin – GAH
Kubrick vs. Allen – ACK
Hitchcock vs. Coens – I officially hate this game now.
Round two was freaking hard – it’s only gonna get harder though, I suppose!
Yeah, I think for some of these I had to get down to specifics before I could even think of picking one director over the other. Scorsese vs. Chaplin was tough, as with Kubrick vs. Allen. The only reason I had no trouble picking Leone over Fellini is because I’ve not seen any of his films, and I’m a bit of a Leone fanboy. But still….ACK!
This round didn’t feel as painful as the last. I had to think a minute on the Coppola vs Hawks. Everything else came pretty easily. Looking forward to round three.
Hawks beat Coppola easily for me, but I don’t think it’s going to turn out that way overall.
DePalma vs. Nichols appeared (at least when I voted) to be a close dog race. Nichols wins out because nothing DePalma has done is as effective as Wit.
Really, Malick vs Burton. Really?
