Here’s a word I never thought I’d be using to describe Matthew Vaughn’s (Stardust and Kick-Ass) upcoming X-Men reboot X-Men: First Class: classy. That’s exactly what the trailer for this film, starring Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, January Jones, Kevin Bacon and a boat load of more equally talented actors, gives off.
It’s quiet, demure and the action sequences, which are present, seem played down. I’m not sure what that means for the movie itself but I’m excited at the prospect of a comic book movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously but manages to tread the line of action and *gasp* drama. And is it just me or is there a dreamlike quality to bits of this trailer?
X-Men: First Class opens June 3rd.
Trailer tucked under the seats.

That looks GOOOOOOOOOD.
Yeah, I’m surprised. Unlike the other summer, superhero blockbusters, this looks like it’s going to be fun.
Although, the James McAvoy vs Fassbender seems to be a very one sided.
The frame you have here is the each moment I mean “Um, wha?” What exactly is going on in this scene….? I mean.. really. I love the cast and 3 of the 4 films but if the mess with gender balance in a world of *mutants* I mean… gah! Such an opportunity to not have to deal with that. Although, I didn’t realize it was period-set… but still!
Of course I’m still excited for it, but not quite as much at the mo. mini-sigh.
of course there are several comic nerds out there mad that x character is too young/old to be in the movie and blah. le sigh.
I’m more interested in this now than I am in any of the other super hero movies coming out; Green Lantern and Captain America both look pretty uninspiring. I’m still not all that excited though, I’m pretty much through with super heroes these days.
Likewise. This is the first one that even made me look twice. It’s also the first super-hero post we’ve had in these parts in ages. I’d pay $10 to see Michael Fassbender eat James McAvoy alongside tea and crumpets.
I’d pay $10 to have tea & crumpets with Fassbender & McAvoy – and I don’t even like crumpets!
I think Captain America also looks good and like this one goes historical + war so it feels distanced but relevant. And I’m not digging that with either – I just want mutants doing cool things that mutants could do plus coming of age stories, which is still possible.
Green Lantern looks different than I expected, but it feels clear they are going for straight-up fun.
The one I’m really surprized as is Cowboys and Aliens. That trailer floored me. Looks crazy boatloads of fun.
Really? Cowboys and Aliens looks like 10 kinds of awful. Not quite Wild Wild West awful, but close. I expect the film to play things too seriously, and yet, not seriously enough. I’m expecting Cowboys and Aliens to be an out and out disaster, whereas I now have high hopes for X-Men 0, I remain completely uninterested and disengaged to either Green Lantern or Captain America or Thor, these look like boring same-old same-old comic book movies to these eyes.
I’m thinking on the fun factor with Cowboys & Aliens – the idea seems ludicrous, but I loved the trailer. Who knows, the trailer might tell a more interesting story than the film but at this point I’m looking forward to it as a fun summer flick. It’s not in the same class (har har) as X-Men, but with X-Men I’m being cautiously curious about as they really flubbed #3.
With both I’m looking forward to them and hoping they will be fun and/or awesome, but not holding my breath or either count.
Hm. Well certainly looks a lot better than Thor, Capt America or Green Hornet (none of which could you drag me to even with a free ticket). The McAvoy/Fassbander angle might sell me on this one. But if anything else opens that week that looks even slightly more interesting I’m not going to make a huge effort to see this.
I’ll get my Fassbender fix about five other times over the next 300 days or so.
There can NEVER be enough Fassbender Fixes. EVER.
I’ll see THOR because I love Branagh and it’s one of the few of the popular comics I ever read. Likely something to do with Mjolnir. Bring on the mighty hammer! Admitedly, I don’t expect greatness but it’ll be fun. Captain American has the Chris Evans factor so I’ll go. As for Green Lantern… yeah… not spending money on that.
This one though, this one actually looks good.
*fistbumps Marina on Fassbender love* I’m planning on seeing all sixty billion films he’s in this year. The rest of the super-hero films, meh. I’m not a comic book person – which ones play into The Avengers? Captain America, Thor? I might have to see those, because I’m definitely planning to see The Avengers as long as Joss Whedon is involved with it.
I’ll see all the comic movies just ’cause. I’ll probably even see Transformers 3 for the ‘laugh at it’ factor that I did with the 2nd one (and it turned out to be an overall pleasant experience with that goal in mind). I’m least excited for Thorrible, which just seems way too plastic…
Also its to just be part of the conversation, particularly within Toronto friends, many of which are such comic nerds that I want to understand the debate. I have one which is my ‘nerd community enemy’ because he falls into the ‘everything is eithe rthe worst ever or best ever’ motif… ie the Lost finale is universally garbage, as is the BSG finale, whereas Iron Man is untouchably perfect.. in all cases there I find the answer is something much more nuanced.
I’m sure I’ll see all the major blockbusters, but X-Men and Captain America are the ones I’m most interested in, probably because their period pieces. I have a hard time getting over the premises of Thor and Cowboys & Aliens, and it doesn’t help that I thought their trailers both looked pretty dodgy.
Transformers 3, on the other hand, had what I thought was easily the best of the Superbowl spots. I know the same was true about the abominable Transformers 2, BUT I still can’t help but feel a little excited about the threequel. At least, for now.
I hate to admit that I think the Transformers 3 trailer was brilliant, I saw it with… Harry Potter I think , not sure if they are still showing the same out but it got me. I won’t see the film, at least not theatrically!
Interesting to hear the divide on Thor – I thought it was pretty awesome. Maybe it will be one for us ladies
