Chris Cooper is awesome (and can rock a ‘stache). That is all.

Funny, I just rewatched Adaptation about a week or so ago (after Hatter talked about it in our top five brothers movies list). And yes, I think this may be Cooper’s best work (along with maybe American Beauty).

The end falls apart a bit with all the actiony stuff at the end, but otherwise a solid pre-cursor to Synecdoche, NY.

Highly recommend John Sayles’ LONE STAR for Chris Cooper’s performance (along side Matthew McConaughey and Kris Kristopherson.)

  3. David Brook says:

I was going to bring up Lone Star as soon as I saw the picture. I’ve been a massive Cooper fan ever since I saw that way back.

That was also my first exposure to the actor, 1996. But it turns out he payed his dues on Miami Vice, Equalizer, Law&Order episodes, as well as the miniseries Lonesome Dove (I still have not gotten around to either of those epic mini-series.) Oh, and Money Train — lets not forget that one!

I think it was American Beauty that put him in the spotlight for a lot of movie-goers, followed up by commercial success of Bourne Identity and the Oscar Win for Adaptation, he’s certainly had a gonzo run of films in this decade.

He is pretty awesome in Sayles’ MATEWAN, which is a very good and little seen movie. David Strathairn is great in it as well.

  6. Kurt says:

You know I have never gotten around to watching Matewan, and I’ve seen most of Sayles’ filmography, and even owned a Matewan poster at one point…time to go check Netflix to see if it is streaming…

  7. Phil says:

It’s not; not in the US anyway. On a side note, I’ve noticed that my saved queue is getting larger than my regular queue. It used to be that Netflix was the place to get some hard to find, independent kind of movies. It seems as if in the last year or so this is getting to be less and less true. I live in Phoenix, which for being such a large city is a shit place to see movies.

  8. Kurt says:

Yep. It is available on Netflix.ca, thanks for the reminder on this, Phil. I’ll probably watch it this weekend!

  9. Phil says:

Nice. Look forward to your thoughts on the next Cinecast.
