“The Kids Are All Right is about a gay couple”

Wow. We must’ve watched different films. Everyone hated it? We must know different people and read different sites. Not to mention the performances are fantastic all around.

  2. Matt Brown says:

Really, didja see the film where the script tells you what every single character is thinking or feeling, at every moment? If that’s what I’m after in my moviegoing, I go see a Transformers movie.

    • Andrew James says:

But just writing the movie off as a story about a gay couple is pretty disingenuous. If the script had a made a big deal out of it, then maybe I could see your point. But the movie isn’t really any sort of statement at all about “gayness” or it’s ok to have a gay family unit. It’s more about parenting adopted children and the need (or un-need) for a father figure. The lesbian parents just throws an interesting (and at times awkward in a good way) monkey into the wrench.

I can see people not liking the movie. That’s fine. But dislike it for what it is, not for what it isn’t.

Also, any fans of Ruffalo, Moore or Bening should flat out like the movie just for those reasons alone as they are all stellar performances. Even Alice (from Wonderland) was pretty darn good in this.

  3. Kurt Halfyard says:

I like most of the cast, but this movie has always sort of reaked of ‘easy viewing and not that interesting’ — As we say on the Cinecast, the “BOTTLE SHOCK of 2010″

  4. Kurt Halfyard says:

The Kings Speech is sort of that, but the performances and the period are fun and interesting.

The Kids Are Alright was alright, but forgettable.

  6. Bob Turnbull says:

I liked “The Kids Are Alright” well enough, but I kinda sit with rot on this – it’ll evaporate from memory after awhile. I liked all the performances for sure (the kids were very good actually), but the three main adult characters just seemed too “on the nose” for what the story needed. There are certainly some nice moments, but all the conflicts seemed somewhat forced. At least, that’s how I remember it…
