The title of this post pretty much says it all. I’m only posting as an excuse to do a Google image search for this year’s Oscar co-host and then imagine her in tight black leather.
In related news, recent new RowThree favorite, Tom Hardy, will also appear in the film as a villain known as Bane. We know he can bulk up and be absolutely a terrifying person (see Bronson or Star Trek: Nemesis), so this sounds like it should work out just swimmingly.
So while I haven’t given much thought to Christopher Nolan’s next (and supposedly final) chapter in his Batman franchise, this casting news seems pretty sweet to me. What say you?

I like both of those actors, I really liked THE DARK KNIGHT, but I am in no way excited for another round of Catwoman/Batman, and of course I’ll say again that I’d rather see Nolan doing Inception/Prestiges than Batman movies.
Catwoman seems like a good choice, especially in light of the whole…Rachel Dawes…thing. And as much as I’d rather see more Inceptions or Prestiges, I’d like to see some kind of closure to this Batman series. Kind of wish they would just have one villain, though.
I MAY NOW DIE HAPPY
ALSO KURT YOU’RE NUTS
ALSO I WAS REALLY COUNTING ON SEAN YOUNG GETTING THIS
Sean Young would be tres-meta! I don’t know all that much about the comics, but isn’t BANE a rather lame villain? Why have 2, Catwoman is interesting enough isn’t she? This is just like when Tim Burton grafted on The Penguin into Batman Returns.
Actually, I see Catwoman as the very definition of a supporting character. I don’t see her providing enough menace as a villain on her own. (Not that Bane can, as conceived in the comics, either. But then, Nolan ain’t gonna give us no comics-Bane.)
Fair Enough. But they’ve an uphill battle after a) The initial look of the redesign in Batman Betins; b) The Joker and Crime angle in The Dark Knight.
You cannot simply put an entry out that this point, it better have a few new ideas on its plate to not feel like a huge step down after The Dark Knight.
I like Hardy and Hathaway, but I don’t think they have the chops to be compelling villains.
Hardy DEFINITELY has the chops. He’s kind of a no-brainer. Hathaway will prove to be interesting. I can’t wait to see if she can pull it off. Look what people said about Ledger when he was announced. I’ve never seen Hathaway go really really dark, so if she can make it work (and I actually think she can if she digs deep), it should be a fascinating portrayal with Nolan’s direction and thought process on the back end.
But agree they have a lot to live up to after Ledger and TDK’s success.
Wasn’t Anne Hathaway Heath Ledger’s Wife in Brokeback Mountain? Weird.
No she was married to Gyllenhall, i.e. the brother of the former girlfriend of Bruce Wayne who got blowed up that one time.
After Rachel Dawes, I’m excited to see a female character taking a more active role in the series, and I think Hathaway is a great choice to play a sultry love interest/quasi villain…I do agree with Matt though that the character just doesn’t have enough menace on her own to play the lead bad guy. After all, she’s basically just a thief.
I’m psyched to see Tom Hardy in anything, but I don’t have all that much interest in Bane (although that could just be because I was put off by his portrayal in Batman & Robin).
I’m also a little disappointed that the rumours of Talia Al Ghul being the villainess have proven (apparently) false. She would have been a more believable baddie than Catwoman, and having the daughter of Bruce’s mentor and first nemesis appear in the final film would have given the series a more conclusive feel.
On a related note, what about the resurgence of the rumour that Aronofsky could take over the franchise after Nolan departs. How do people feel about that?
Aronofsky doing X-Men is disappointing enough. From Fountain to Wrestler to Black Swan to fucking X-Men to lame.
Catwoman certainly will be interesting. Not sure if Hathaway can pull it off, especially in the “realistic” universe of Nolan’s Batman.
I was personally hoping for Harley Quinn as the female villain, but this is interesting. I’m going to remain skeptical until I see something, but I trust Christopher Nolan, and know that he has something cool up his sleeve. Like most people, I was not initially thrilled about Ledger being cast as The Joker, but knew that Nolan knew what he was doing.
This movie has huge shoes to fill, though.
Agreed Steve, I was hoping for Harley Quinn myself. So much more fun as a character and really Catwoman does not appeal to me much aside from the sweet-ass latex suit.
I am pretty excited to see Hardy as Bane though, I really like the choice of that character and the actor to play him. Should be great.
I thought I was the only one who wanted to see Harley Quinn. Far, far, far more interesting of a character and she seems much more appropriate for the world that Nolan has created.
