• Robert: The Psychic Killer Tire

I had assumed this was a joke when I read it on EW earlier today, but apparently this is real. Very real. One can only wonder why it took so long for somebody to come up with such an obvious idea.

Rubber is a film from some guy named Quentin Dupieux who is also a French electro house musician named Mr. Oizo. Apparently, he’s made a couple of movies before, but I have never heard of either. His latest though, sounds absolutely whacked. Below, read the official premise for the film, according to the official website, which lists the theatrical release date as April 1st and the On Demand release date as February 25th:

RUBBER is the story of Robert, an inanimate tire that has been abandoned in the desert, and suddenly and inexplicably comes to life. As Robert roams the bleak landscape, he discovers that he possesses terrifying telepathic powers that give him the ability to destroy anything he wishes without having to move. At first content to prey on small desert creatures and various discarded objects, his attention soon turns to humans, especially a beautiful and mysterious woman who crosses his path. Leaving a swath of destruction across the desert landscape, Robert becomes a chaotic force to be reckoned with, and truly a movie villain for the ages.

As if it doesn’t sound strange enough, you just have to check out this trailer. It’s just… bizarre.

Jonathan doesn’t read this site enough. There are at least 2 (maybe 3) reviews (Kurt’s , Bob’s, Marina’s) of Rubber in the archive. It popped up on at least one Top 10 of the year (Bob’s) and was Honorable mention in a couple other lists. But hey, I don’t mind this fantastic film getting a bit more column inches on the site.

Jeez… where have I been? I guess those reviews were summertime when I was almost nonexistent.

Thanks for the links though. Loved reading them.

  3. was my #26 I think, hey Kurt we both love this film, we do agree on most good things, seeing Confessions this week as well.

Its getting one screening here in Oz, in Canberra next month (I saw it at MIFF 2010) were most people did’nt like it?

Its sweet and better than the other film of his i’ve seen, Steak (watched it in French, can find subs or dvd with subs of it, though I okay with my French & Spanish and its mainly visual)

though he id make a film back in 2001 called Nonfilm which sounds awesome, instead of a triple-play BR/DVD/DC why not a triple play of all his films FINALLY on the big BR latter this year, nice, see it as pratically-joke XMAS pressie.

  4. Jandy says:

It was on my top ten, too, Kurt.

  5. Bob Turnbull says:

Yep, it made both mine and Jandy’s fave ten of the year (thanks for reading Jonathan! 8) ). Leave expectations at the door and don’t read anything more about it before seeing it.

Darcy, I’ll be curious to hear what you think of Confessions (that also made my top ten).

  6. Kurt Halfyard says:

I’m really, really itching to revisit CONFESSIONS, the screening I caught of the film (my final film screening in Spain last October) blew my mind….

  7. Bob Turnbull says:

You and me both Kurt…I had reservations walking out of the TIFF screening, but it’s only grown in my mind since (hence my top ten designation).
