• Golden Globe Winners

Ricky Gervais is back again this year (somewhat surprisingly) to host the annual awards handed out by the Hollywood Foreign Press. Quite honestly the main reason to watch is for Gervais lightly pushing some boundaries in his commentary (especially with the nuttiness of the categories this year). Still, The Golden Globes are a kind of warm-up party for Oscar night and simply put, I like awards shows and watching the stars show up and have a good time with one another. They call this one Hollywood’s biggest party so it’s fun to see all the stars just having a good time. It isn’t quite as loose as the Spirit Awards, but I’ll take it for now.

We’ll be highlighting the winners tonight as they are announced, so drop by frequently for updates and commentary…
(we’re not posting the television awards – if you’d like to see those nominees, they are here.

since i no longer have cable, anyone know if this is streaming anywhere?

  2. Goon says:

DeNiro trying to be funny is always weird.

  3. Andrew James says:

So anticlimactic. This will be how the Oscars turned out too.

  4. Andrew James says:

    Thoughts on Gervais?
“Thank you to God… for making me an atheist.”

  5. Goon says:

I only saw the last hour or so. I enjoyed Gervais

  6. Goon says:

Look at Johnny Depp… he knows the joke is true, just look at his face :P

  7. antho42 says:

“Thank you to God… for making me an atheist.”
Very original.. oh wait, Luis Bunuel wasn’t the host?
What an elitist, prick. Doesn’t understand the difference between comedy and acting like a twat.

  8. Goon says:

people are such pussies. The reality is the majority of his material is not much different than you’d hear on late night TV. I love Gervais but he’s getting credit for things a lot of comedians normally say and to wild applause, but just not with those same people in the room.

  9. David Brook says:

They didn’t get shown over here unfortunately. Looks like they were fairly predictable. I’ve not heard of the Best Foreign Language winner though. Anyone seen it?

Oh and shameless self-promotion: the BAFTA nominations are announced tomorrow morning at 7.40am (GMT) and the short I edited and our company produced is in the final shortlist!! So fingers crossed people. I think I’ll wet myself a little bit if it gets nominated :)

Watch the announcement here live if anyone’s awake: http://www.bafta.org/awards/film/2011-film-awards-nominations-announcement,1607,BA.html

  10. Goon says:

The HFPA member who said this though, is a massive twat:

“”Ricky will not be invited back to host the show next year, for sure,” the HFPA member said. “For sure any movie he makes he can forget about getting nominated. He humiliated the organization last night and went too far with several celebrities whose representatives have already called to complain.”"

Once again showing the HFPA has nothing to do with actual quality. As the Tourist and countless other noms show, all they exist for is to celeb hob nob and get pictures taken.

  11. David Brook says:

Damn I really wish I saw it now. Was he that harsh? Or is it just the HFPA being way over the top.

    • Andrew James says:

It’s a little bit of both. But mostly it’s a bunch of snobby celebs and execs that are used to having praise lavished upon them and last night Gervais gave them a little elbow to the ribs. I echo Goon’s sentiments: “Pussies.”

Take out Gervais and last night’s show would’ve been the most predictable snooze-fest imaginable.

  12. Tom Clift says:

Gervais was the only reason the show was entertaining

  13. David Brook says:

No BAFTA nomination for us. Boo!

  14. Henrik says:

Foreign language winner was my favorite movie of last year, so check it out if you can. Fantastic.

I watched Gervais’ monologue and I thought it was awesome. Who cares about “For sure any movie he makes he can forget about getting nominated. He humiliated the organization last night and went too far with several celebrities whose representatives have already called to complain.” when you can have a laugh instead. I’ll take the laugh.

  15. David Brook says:

Cheers, yeah it’s still pretty awesome to get that close.

  16. Goon says:

are we gonna play ‘guess the 10 oscar nominees for best picture’ again this year?

    my early guess:

    Black Swan
    True Grit
    Inception
    Kings Speech
    Toy Story 3
    The Fighter
    The Kids Are All Right
    Social Network
    127 Hours

10th spot: undecided, Blue Valentine, Rabbit Hole, The Town Winter’s Bone all feel possible
