• 2011 Independent Spirit Award Nominees

Equally meaningless, but arguably a whole lot more fun to watch than the Oscars. Better films/celebs nominated, more relaxed, more accurate and a lot more alcohol. This year’s awards will be given out live on Saturday, February 26th on IFC channel at 10pm ET.

  1. Mike Rot says:

Very, very happy that Greenberg has Best Picture nod and both Ben Stiller and Greta Gerwig are up for best performances. The lack of a nomination for Ryan Gosling’s performance in Blue Valentine cheapens the whole thing though.

  2. Kurt says:

Miffed that I’ve now missed 3 screenings of Rabbit Hole in this city, and will be missing one more before teh films eventual release.

Happy to see Bill Murray of all folks in there for GET LOW.

    Also Gerwig, of course.

The Indie Spirits really focused on just a few films this year, but there aer some definite oddball nominations, like Ashley Bell in The Last Exorcist…

  3. Mike Rot says:

Anybody heard anything about Exploding Girl? Noticed it on Netflix, it is up for Cassavettes award whatever that means.

  4. Marina says:

EXPLODING GIRL’s been kicking around for a while (I actually thought it was an 09 release). Haven’t seen it but it’s on my short list of things to watch before the end of the year. OBSELIDIA also looked really great but it never played around here which is disappointing.

Generally happy with the noms, especially the WINTER’S BONE love – fantastic little film.

Also thrilled to see Mike Ott get some love for LITTLEROCK. I really loved that film.

  5. Jandy says:

Whoa, I’ve actually seen all three of the “someone to watch” films. Totally agree about Mike Ott and Hossein Keshavarz. The Wolf Knife was one of my least favorite festival films this year, though – it was really amateurish and not so much in a fresh kind of way as in a really offputting kind of way. But I will admit there were sparks of something more in it, and I’d watch another film by the director to see if she capitalized on those.

Also glad to see Myth of the American Sleepover on there – I loved that one. Interesting mix of stuff – The King’s Speech in the same category with Kisses is kind of amusing.

  6. Cassavetes Award is for “really” low-budget films, whatever that means. Lovers of Hate is also on Netflix, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I’m going to try to watch Exploding Girl soon on the Netflix. Zoe Kazan was tantalizingly cute on this season of Bored to Death.

How can I see Littlerock here in Toronto? Is it out on DVD yet?

And though I haven’t seen Tiny Furniture yet, Jody Lee Lipes is an amazing cinematographer. If you don’t believe me, you need to wach NY Export: Opus Jazz, now available on DVD from Factory 25.

  7. Marina says:

There has been some serious buzz about Tiny Furniture since it played I think it was NY. I’m looking forward to eventually seeing it.

No details on Littlerock in Toronto or any other distribution. We’ll be sure to let you know when we hear anything.
