I just happened to be perusing Quiet Earth this morning and noticed that Marina posted the trailer for a new Monte Hellman film entitled Road to Nowhere. Hellman is best know for his fiercely independent productions, notably 1971′s Two-Lane Blacktop. That’s actually the only Hellman film I’ve seen, but I pretty much loved it and that’s enough to get me to take notice of the fact that he’s got a new one out – apparently his first theatrical feature film since 1988′s Iguana. The film played well in Venice in competition for the Golden Lion (though it lost to Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere), and Hellman won a special award for his lifetime of work.
I have to admit I really enjoy song-montage trailers, because they get across the mood and don’t give away the story, which is exactly what I want from a trailer. Promises of blurring fact and fiction and truth and art also hit my sweet spots. According the sparse IMDb synopsis, the basic plot is this: “A young filmmaker gets wrapped up in a crime while shooting his new project on location.” So far, I’ve seen nothing I don’t like, and having Shannyn Sossamon around can’t hurt either.
Marina previously posted about the film here.
Check out the trailer under the seats.
