Well this is indeed saddening; especially since we just had a brief discussion on last night’s Cinecast about the Invasion of the Body Snatchers series. Mr. McCarthy was 96 years old(!) and died on September 11th of complication from pneumonia.
I haven’t seen him in much lately but he’ll still be missed. I remember him most (or first) as the goofy and scared Uncle Walt from the bizarre, “It’s a Good Life” segment of Twilight Zone: The Movie. Later kicking some ass in the low budget, “Weird” Al vehicle, UHF. Not many actors get to utter the line, “a festering bowl of dog snot” and McCarthy pulls it off wonderfully.
He’s always been a recognizable face and a charismatic actor in everything I’ve ever seen him in and he always made me happy when he turned up in a film. So condolences to friends and family and for movie goers and television fans of the last 65 years or so (especially those of the campier horror and sci-fi ilk), he will be missed.

If anyone in the Mpls. area is interested, The Heights theater is screening the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers on Mon. Sep 27 @ 9:15
