Paul Rudd is rad. Even in the ridiculousness that was the mid-90s Clueless, he had a dorky and endearing charm to him that made every teenage boy who secretly watched it on HBO when his brothers were asleep wonder, “How can I utilize my dorkiness to be so awesome?” After going on to do a whole lot of nothing for a few years, he then continued being rad in the likes of Wet Hot American Summer, Anchorman, The 40 Year Old Virgin, the underwatched but excellent Diggers, Knocked Up, Role Models, Forgetting Sarah Marshall (our review), and I Love You Man (our review) – some of which were bad movies much like Clueless, yet he made sure to charm the pants off the viewers any time he was on the screen. He’s just one likable dude and one we’d like to sit around with playing video games and drinking beer. He is also longtime best friends with Jon Hamm – better known as Don Draper from Mad Men. How cool is that?
It goes without saying, of course, that Steve Carrell is equally awesome and when they make a new movie, I can’t help but to have high expectations, even if the trailer does very little to induce laughter – and well, the trailer below didn’t really make me laugh a whole lot, but some of the movies I mentioned above (Virgin, FSM, I Love You Man) had equally unfunny trailers and turned out to be awfully enjoyable.
Dinner for Schmucks will be making its way to theaters on July 23.
The Dinner Game is an excellent film and plays equally in broad slapstick and subtle low key comedy. And doesn’t go where you expect it will.
That’s not this movie…The good thing is that it doesn’t appear they are trying to translate it – it’s obviously not a remake as it is just using the basic premise. I expect if it’s funny, it will be due to the actors themselves and not the script (though you’re right about the trailers for those other films Jonathan – none of them looked very good out of the gate).
I disagree about Clueless though – that was a clever film in many ways.
I didn’t even read anything about this. I just watched the trailer. I had no idea it was a remake or inspired by another movie or whatever. Which is kind of irresponsible, seeing as I’m writing for a movie blog.
I remember The Dinner Game being sort of reprehensible and not actually all that funny. Maybe I’m remembering it wrong. I bet Carrel and Rudd make this one pretty laughable (in a good way).
Also, Kudos for mentioning “Diggers” Jonathan. You’re right: underrated and underwatched. It’s one I’ve been meaning to pick up on DVD but not all that easy to find in just any store.
Jonathan, I haven’t even heard of “Diggers” and I think Paul Rudd is as Rad as you do…So at the very least, I’m as irresponsible as you. B-)
Andrew, some of the characters in The Dinner Game are indeed reprehensible, but I didn’t find the movie to be that way. It surprised me in its approach to the story, so maybe that’s why I found it so funny. I kinda want to see it again now…
something tells me this isn’t going the translate well. The Dinner Game french version I remember being pretty funny.
