I am one of the (currently) 58.8 percent.

  2. Andrew James says:

I went with No Country. But Crash and Departed would tie for close second.

  3. Jandy Stone says:

No Country’s among my all-time favorites. I think The Departed is the only other one that comes even close.

  4. David Brook says:

It makes me realise how wrong the Oscars usually get it. No Country is awesome obviously and without wanting to start the usual debate I am a LOTR fan, but most of the others are just pretty good – a good distance from ‘the best’ of their years.

Everyone to their own opinions I guess.

  5. Mad Hatter says:

Count me as well as one of the 53% for NO COUNTRY, though choosing between the last four wasn’t terribly easy.

  6. rot says:

that is a terrible track record.

  7. Kurt Halfyard says:

    What Rot said.

The Oscars had to fall into a good film in 2007, as there was simply so many good films released in that year. In fact, I’d replace most of the titles above with 2007′s Best of Class: Inland Empire, There Will Be Blood, Zodiac, No Country For Old Men, The Assassination of Jesse James, Gone Baby Gone, Paprika, The Darjeeling Limited, 28 Weeks Later. But y’all already know that, dontcha.

    • Andrew James says:

The fact that WTWTA was not nominated for ANYTHING (or Che for that matter) = Oscar FAIL in my book.

Still happy that Avatar didn’t win though.

      • Andrew James says:

I agree the track record is pretty bad. I mean I like all of these movie well enough, but I never think any of them are even close to being the best picture of the year (except No Country). PS – rewatched part of Crash the other night. Still really like that movie.

  8. David Brook says:

I didn’t go for Crash, it just felt a bit forced and lacked subtlety. I think other films have done a much better job with multi-character racially themed dramas in the past, especially what I’ve seen of John Sayles’ work who tackles similar subject matter a lot of the time. Lone Star springs to mind, a much stronger film than Crash.

  9. murph says:

CRASH is awful. just awful. i hated every melodramatic, stupid moment of it. the invisible shield scene or whatever… UGH.

THE DEPARTED gets my vote. it has its fair share of problems (as do all of these movies) but they are easier to overlook.

with all this said, seeing this lineup of movies next to one another, the movies just aren’t that impressive. why are the Oscars taken so seriously?

  10. Luke says:

Wow, wouldn’t have expected No Country. I figured The Departed or LOTR would take the poll easily.

  11. David Brook says:

LOTR isn’t all that well loved here at Row Three (I like it though!). The Departed is quite divisive too, whereas I know very few people that don’t like No Country.
