Rank ’em: Leonardo DiCaprio

With my recent re-fascination and enjoyment with flickchart (that now allows rankings of only actors or directors (had a good time ranking all my Soderbergh movies by the way) and also with all the recent Shutter Island talk around here, I’ve renewed my interest and respect for DiCaprio. He always, always puts on a good performance. Since I’ve seen just about everything in his body of work, here is how I see the quality of his films (not his performances) ranked in order from favorite to least favorite starting with the earliest work that I can remember seeing him in (Gilbert Grape)…

Titanic
The Departed
Shutter Island
Romeo and Juliet
What’s Eating Gilbert Grape
Gangs of New York
Revolutionary Road
The Aviator
Catch Me If You Can
The Basketball Diaries
Blood Diamond
The Quick and the Dead
The Man in the Iron Mask
Body of Lies
The Beach

NOT SEEN:
Marvin’s Room
Celebrity
Don’s Plum
Total Eclipse
The Foot Shooting Party

Seems you have a pretty big omission, This Boys Life.

Titanic….really?

He's excellent in Marvin's Room, Celebrity and total eclipse – Marvin's room in fact is one of my favorite films , period. Has Meryl Streep, Diane Keaton and DeNiro as well- a dream cast.

I heart THE BEACH, one of the more underrated Danny Boyle films.

…But Catch Me If You Can is easily the best DiCaprio film that I've seen, and it is his best performance to boot.

Marvin's Room if I recall correctly, is an unmitigated disaster, despite the high profile cast.

I've been Skipping DiCaprio movies for no reason other than they the movies themselves look mediocre (Body of Lies, Blood Diamond)

Top DiCaprios performances:

Catch Me If You Can

Revolutionary Road

Shutter Island

The Aviator

The Quick and The Dead

The Basketball Diaries

The Beach

What's Eating Gilbert Grape? (admittedly, it's been a long while on this one)

I agree with Kurt, Catch Me If You Can is far and away DiCaprio's best movie and his best performance. Here's my ranking, number 1 at the top (I've not seen a few of his):

Catch Me If You Can

Revolutionary Road

The Departed

Gangs of New York

Body of Lies

Blood Diamon

Titanic

The Beach

The rest you have listed, Andrew, I haven't seen (yes, including The Aviator).

Well, some films staring Leonardo DiCaprio are awesome despite a middling performance!

kurt, yer out to lunch on the Beach.

Rusty, you are not the first to say so. There is a hypnotic, almost idealized quality to THE BEACH, it's like a sixties experiment in late 1990s clothing. And the cast, from Guillame Canet to Tilda Swinton to Robert Carlyle's cameo are superb! Intended or not, there is a certain satire on pre-millennial 20 somethings, a group I happen to belong to, so perhaps the resonance….

the book's really good

I haven't watched The Beach since it came out on VHS a decade ago. I didn't like it so much then, but I was also fourteen years old at the time. As for this list, DiCaprio is one of my favorites and definitely one of the best working in Hollywood.

I've watched all of his movies (except Shutter Island, which I'll hopefully catch soon) and I'm not sure if I could pick a favorite. It'd be between Catch Me if You Can and The Departed probably, but I'm a fan of everything he's in, from his younger years to present day.

I've got a lot of time for DiCaprio, but looking at that list of films I find he's been in a lot of flawed and overrated films (in my opinion at least).

There are a lot I haven't seen for ages so I won't do a list. I thought The Beach was ok but nothing special, the book is much more successful in getting it's message across. I'm not a fan of The Aviator or The Departed, they're both solid but highly overrated. I would be tempted to have Catch Me If You Can at the top of my list too, I enjoyed that film quite a bit apart from the abrupt conclusion to the chase. I used to quite like Romeo and Juliet, but it's been at least a decade since I've seen that, as with Titanic and Gilbert Grape.

The Beach is awesome for a good long while, but it falls victim to the Boyle Curse where the latter part is a drop off in quality from the rest of the film. The Beach happens to be the most significant drop off of them all, yes much more than Sunshine.

Goon has a point, The Beach does indeed fall apart in the last act, and yes, I'd love to see Boyle solve this particular problem with his films. STAT.
