I am a bit late in posting this but here are my top 25 posters from 2009. There are a wide range of movies represented and not all of them are good but their posters definitely are.
#25 – The Limits of Control

I love the look of this one as it reminds me of the Buena Vista Social Club for some strange reason. It’s probably the guitar that does it or the fact that it looks like an old poster for a music concert.
#24 – Crank 2

I wasn’t a big fan of Crank 2 but the poster does a a great job tweaking the original concept into something new while still reminding us of the original one.
#23 – Order of Chaos

It isn’t so much the objects that are on the poster so much as it is the placement of them. Without knowing anything about the movie I’m told so much about it or perhaps its main character.
#22 – Objectified

I used to spend time looking at clip art and design books which had page after page of small images that looked just like the ones above. Perhaps that is why I like this one so much.
#21 – Hadewich

I love the amount of emotion in her face. She looks so sad yet still hopeful. I really should find out more about the movie.
#20 – Treeless Mountain

Another poster that uses whitespace so well. Who needs big oversize floaty heads when you can convey so much more from so little.
#19 – Public enemies

I love the color scheme and I love the mirroring of the Depp’s shape in the credits.
#18 – Star Trek

Classic yet updated. Nothing else really needs to be said… except that they should have changed the date.
#17 – Grace

Something that should really bring me happy thoughts is turned into a very simple yet disturbing image.
#16 – Up

Like many other posters on my list, when you provide us with lots of whitespace to highlight the few small focal points you have a winning poster. This is one that would really stand out without any of the text.
#15 – Antichrist

This one is so wrong in its imagery that I can’t help but love it.
#14 – A Serious Man

The more I go through the list the more I realize just how much I like wide open spaces on posters. When I look at this one I see a man who is going to either conquer the world or a guy who is stuck on a roof and is unable to.
#13 – Up in the Air

I used to travel fairly often. I really can see myself as Clooney standing there waiting for the flight. He is so alone waiting yet there are others around who are going to intrude into his world.
#12 – Terminator: Salvation

A lot of people have mentioned the poster where the buildings make up the face of the Terminator but I think this is a much more powerful photo of something that is able to create such fear yet it has been destroyed by the carrier. The fear and power of the Terminator is still there even in this subjugated state.
#11 – The Informant!

I love the goofiness of the photo and once again, whitespace equals good poster.
#10 – The Stepfather

Just plain creepy. I’m sure the movie sucks but I love how it creates the sense of horror with so little on the page.
#9 – Breathless

I don’t know what they did to make the hair and the dents in the skin stand out so much but wow is it stunning.
#8 – The House of the Devil

A pure classic looking poster for what I hear is a pure classic feeling horror movie.
#7 – The Girlfriend Experience

I’d love to see this one without the dots. Yes, I do love the look of the dots over the face but I think I might like it even more without them. I’ll probably take some flack for that but I really enjoy the soft blurred look of peoples faces.
#6 – Moon

From the small lone name of Sam Rockwell in the top corner to the amazing use of "whitespace", this one really does the job of conveying how alone he really is.
#5 – The Broken

I’ve seen this one "copied" on several other movies and none of those do it half as well. Its not just the face combined with the glass but the serious disturbed look that Headey is making that draws me in.
#4 – Surveillance

I could talk about the crucifixion imagery or how bleak the poster is but really I just love how stunning the contrast is between the bird and the lit up clouds behind it.
#3 – Where the Wild Things Are

I’m sorry to say this is one of the ones that I still haven’t seen. This one really conveys the different emotions that I have been told are represented in the movie. It contains such a sense of wonder yet still shows the anger and fear that Max goes through.
#2 – Inglorious Basterds

I would have been fine with any of the posters from Inglourious Basterds ending up on my list. I love the touch of adding in the etched in names on the bat. It makes it feel much more personal and friendly.
#1 – The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

The combined chaos and order and style of this one is pure Gilliam and it is beautiful. It also really reminds me of my son’s books that challenge him to find the hidden objects.

I want that Limits of Control poster, and that is only one of two great designs they did for it.
#8 is terrific. I am glad to see that you included it in the list. Although the trailer was great, the poster is what really sold me on seeing the film — yet another way in which the film reminded me of days gone by.
The Terminator one doesn’t grab me much, but otherwise there’s not a bad one on the bunch. Great choices. Love the Objectified one.
And I hadn’t thought of those I Spy books (or the newer ones Can You See What I See – both by Walter Wick) in relation to Parnassus, but that’s bang on. I love those books. Possibly more than my son did.
I saw Treeless Mountain last night. Beautiful film. The two kids are terrific and interspersed are some lovely images of their surroundings – especially the sky. Not to flog my own blog, but I posted some of them here.
Awesome – great selections, particularly the ones outside of the mainstream fare. That said, it’s only now that I realized how brilliant that “Up” poster was.
Those are all great. I used the Imaginarium poster in a blog entry at http://www.wehavebeards.com.
I’m with rot, the Limits of Control is an awesome poster.
