  • Jeunet | Micmacs | Trailer | Rejoice

    13

A director we don’t often talk about around here but definitely should be is Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Easily in my personal list of top 3 directors working today, I just love his signature auteur style that invokes a little bit of Almodóvar, a little bit of Terry Gilliam and whole lotta charm (which almost always includes the fantastic Dominique Pinon). Look at the guy’s filmography and you’d be hard pressed to find a film that isn’t simply exquisite (please no jokes about Alien 4 – that movie is awesome).

The film screened at The Toronto Film Festival in September and has since been picked up by Sony Pictures Classics who have put together and released a trailer. The film revolves around Bazil (Dany Boon) who is accidentally shot in the head and finds his whole life turned upside down. Homeless, he ends up being taken in by a group of eccentrics, and starts to plot with them to take down the source of all his woes: the weapons manufacturers responsible for the bullets that hit him and killed his father years before.

While this latest trailer is a bit on the goofy side and possibly even a little messy, one can’t deny the visual heart put into this as well as what appears to be some pretty fun “Jerry Lewis”-esque performances. If this ever makes it anywhere near my neck of the woods (which is likely to be a long time from now) I can guarantee my butt will be comfortably warming one of the theater seats.

  • Sexy Beast writer and cast reunion: It is the 44 Inch Chest trailer!

    2
    44InchChest

Well, lookie here, a sort of sequel to Jonathan Glazer’s wonderful Sexy Beast. A sequel insofar as the same writers (Louis Mellis and David Scinto) and much of the same cast are involved (the directorial change is to Malcolm Venville). Ian McShane (pre-Deadwood, post-Lovejoy) showed in Sexy Beast that he can do intense and intimidating, and Ray Winstone, and actor who has been doing character work in a plethora of Hollywood blockbusters for the past since Sexy Beast are back, and joined by Tom Wilkinson and John Hurt (two actors who have also been doing character work for years in the Hollywood mainstream and also the land of indie). That makes this one instantly worth a lot.

A low-key crime drama/thriller 44 Inch Chest, according to those who have seen it, brings profanity to a some sort of new level. According to the IMDb: “A jealous husband and his friends plot the kidnapping of his wife’s lover with the intention of restoring his wounded ego.

Trailer (and links to character promos) are tucked under the seat.

  • Review: Them!

    1
    Doomsday Movie Marathon

    Them!
    (4.5/5)

[Chris Edwards, who writes extensively about silent films on his blog, Silent Volume, has written the following review of Them!. To see the full programme click on the Doomsday header image above.]

The most important scene in THEM! has not a single giant ant in it. In fact, there’s no screaming, bold declarations or violent acts to be seen—just the quiet after-effects of all three. State troopers Ben Peterson (James Whitmore) and Ed Blackburn (Chris Drake) are searching ‘Gramps’ Johnson’s badly vandalized general store, located in the New Mexico desert, not far from where the Manhattan Project exploded its first atomic bomb, nine years before. Gramps is missing. The store has been half-demolished by something seemingly stronger than a man, and the cash register remains full. The cops step through the wreckage, baffled and silent, while behind them, Gramps’ radio cackles away. Malaria, the radio announcer declares, is being eradicated in many parts of the globe. Another victory for modern science.

Who wouldn’t encourage scientists to eradicate malaria—a disease that kills millions? The men and women working toward a vaccine must have the best of intentions. Likewise, the cops sifting through Gramps’ store are just professionals, doing their jobs. When they find Gramps’ mutilated corpse, flung to the bottom of his cellar steps, they report it. Neither jumps to conclusions, even though they’ve had a weird day already. Earlier, they found a catatonic five-year-old girl wandering the highway, clutching a doll with a broken face. They traced her back to a deserted travel trailer, destroyed much like the store. » Read the rest of the entry..

  • Can’t Wait for “NINE”

    0

Only 31 days left on the year and not a single title has me more anticipatory than Rob Marshall’s NINE (which I am from here on out going to write in all capital letters). Normally I’m not a fan of these types of “overdone” musical spectacles but for some reason (not the reason you’re probably thinking) NINE grabs me in just the right way and I fully expect a break into my top ten experience for this one. I’ve raved about this movie enough over here and there and more recently over here, so this will be my final say on the matter until the movie hits my local theater. The third and most plot-explanatory trailer has been released and you can see it below the seats…

  • 25th Annual Independent Spirit Award Nominees

    8

Last year was the first year I ever actually sat down and watched the Independent Spirit Awards. The first and won’t be the last. After the enjoyment I got out of that awards ceremony I’d be hard pressed to ever miss it again. They maybe aren’t as “important” as the Oscars, but around here we love our indie gems and to see the proper movies recognized for achievement rather than the wrong ones is always nice.

For the Spirit Awards, all eligible feature films must be at least 70 minutes in length, and the entire cost of a completed project must be under $20 million. A film also must have either screened at a major film festival including Sundance, Toronto or Film Independent’s own Los Angeles Film Festival or had a one-week engagement at a commercial theater.

The mood and celebratory nature of the indie awards is so much more fun too. The guests are all partying and drinking and cussing and some are wearing jeans and a t-shirt rather than the stuffy penguins suits or triptastic ballroom gowns. This year’s ceremony will air live and uncut on IFC on March 5th. The nominees were announced this morning and we’ve got them all posted right here. Best feature is first and the rest of the nominees are stuck under the seats…

    Best Feature

    • 500 Days Of Summer
    • Amreeka
    • Precious
    • Sin Nombre

  • Out of the Loop – I Need Your Help

    15

mrnobody232009 has not been the best year for me and and movies. I’ve been pretty busy with everything but movies. As we are all starting to consider our best of 2009 I came to the conclusion that my list would be pretty sparse. Therefore I need your help. Give me suggestions and on my week off after Christmas I will try to watch as many of the suggestions as possible. While, I don’t mind a whole bunch of recommendations for comedies I will probably only fit one in to that week and that will either be Observe and Report, Funny People or The Hangover. I’m not a huge fan of the current Hollywood comedy style.

  • Cinecast Episode 145 – Animalistic Nature

    Episode 145:

    SPOILERS ALERT!
Fantastic Mr. Fox opens this weeks show on a fantastic note and is followed up quickly by a fantastically epic episode. An Education gets a lengthy (fantastic) mention as well as Cormac McCarthy’s fantastic novel adaptation, The Road – which finally got a slightly wider release last week. Not such a fantastic week in the DVD department but that is more than made up for with fantastic discussions on the fantastic Noah Baumbach, Coppola Siblings, James Cameron and introducing kids to the fantastic Star Wars trilogy. Thanks so much for checking out this fantastic show and feel free to leave your thoughts (let them be fantastic!) in the comment section below. As snobby as we may sound, we love to hear discussion and/or disagreement from any of our fantastic regular or fist time listeners.

  • TONY’s 50 of the Decade List is Impressive

    5

It’s December 1st and the lists are coming. Best of lists are being formed all across the web and as if trying to dwindle down the year in film to 10 selections, we have another monumental task ahead: creating a list of films that have stood out over the last decade. Ten years of film could be an even more daunting task considering some of the amazing years we’ve had but like it or not, it’s coming and Time Out New York is one of the first out of the gate.

Row Three’s list is sure to be coming in the next few weeks but looking over the titles on TONY’s list is almost like someone cracked open our back room and fished through our lists to pick the best of the best. Right off the top there aren’t any glaring omissions (though I’m thinking Memento should have made the list) but their list does include some surprising titles including Artificial Intelligence: AI, Miami Vice and Inglorious Basterds.

As if you needed more proof that these guys are right in line with us, check out their top 10:

    10. Friday Night
    9. A Christmas Tale
    8. Zodiac
    7. Dogville
    6. Yi Yi (A One and a Two…)
    5. In the Mood for Love
    4. The New World
    3. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
    2. There Will Be Blood
    1. Mulholland Drive

I’m willing to forgive them A Christmas Tale for the genius of the rest of their list. Check out all of the titles, along with the rationale for including them, here.
