Very well said, Bob - 8 1/2 DOES rule, and there is no way Nine will ever top it - no matter how many big musical numbers, gorgeous women or Daniel Day-Lewis it packs in.

I also really like Juliet Of The Spirits...It was the second Fellini I saw and it's stuck with me much longer than the first which was Amarcord (which certainly got across the term "Fellini-esque", but otherwise didn't work for me too well). JotS has Giulietta Masina in it which of course immediately makes it worth watching, but it also has some very arresting visuals and is almost a Fellini horror movie at times.

8 1/2 rules. Nine won't. I still want to see it though and hope that it makes for an entertaining romp.

I actually watched Nine yesterday, before rewatching 8 1/2. I'm hoping to get a review up today, but I haven't had time at work to write it up. Apparently I had time to write long-ass comments about Avatar, though. Oh well. But I'm glad, actually, that I saw Nine without having 8 1/2 fresh in my head.

Thank you, Jandy!

I also believe that Fellini's earlier stuff is pretty special, while his later works are pretty scattershot. Interesting, but not as successful on an emotional level. 8 1/2 was the first one of his I actually saw, and still my favorite - and one of my favorite movies in general. It'll be interesting to see how Nine adapts the story in a different way besides Fellini's. It has already been a little strange to see characters and scenes I know and love so well in the trailers for Nine.

I agree with you, Marc. It's actually been long enough since I've seen Amarcord that I don't remember it very well. I'm more a fan of his earlier stuff, actually - La Strada and Nights of Cabiria are my favorites. I actually rewatched 8 1/2 last night and still don't like it as much as I want to. Oh, and La Dolce Vita. I like that one, too.

Also, you have good taste. :)

I absolutely love Jules and Jim, Nights of Cabiria, Bicycle Thieves, Volver and The Lives of Others. Amarcord never grabbed me as much as people say. It definitely has some great parts to it, but other moments were just too strange or flat-out annoying for me. I agree with Ebert's belief that it was the last major triumph of Fellini's career.
