It looks like a change for the character, but very much business as usual for Ridley and Russell. Not that I’m surprised, but it is just Gladiator 2. Should be fun and pretty-looking but I’m not expecting a masterpiece.
Aside from the music, this doesn’t look much different than the Costner version does it? Which ain’t necessarily a bad thing. A childhood hero for sure, I will see Robin Hood opening day if I can.
It looks like it’s taking itself a lot more seriously than the Costner one. Plus it looks pretty dark, especially in the opening of the trailer. The Costner Hood was more of a family-friendly action romp sort of thing.
Whoa Daddy. That there was pretty violent for a robinhood movie.
Yea, I’ll see this one, but really can anyone top John Cleese as Robin Hood?
“So, you’re a robber? And You? Good Show. How Long Have You Been a Robber? Jolly Good.”

It’s been years, but I have a soft spot for the Patrick Bergin/Uma Thurman Robin hood movie that was made for British TV just before the Costner one.
The Costner movie is indeed ridiculous, but man both Alan Rickman and Michael Wincott are a hoot onscreen. I seem to recall a rumour that Rickman’s screentime was cut back because he was outshadowing the star of the film. Not sure if it was anything past a rumour. Speaks volumes though.
I’m looking forward to this retelling of the classic story. I have never seen the Cosner movie nor the more recent BBC mini-series.
My familiarity of Robin Hood is based on a 1976 BBC mini-series starring Martin Potter. I was about 9 or 10 at the when I saw it and the dramatization really captivated me. I remember King John being especially vile and repugnant. (played by David Dixon.) I am sure that if I revisited it today it not hold the same appeal that it did for me then. But I recall that the story was not a happily-ever-after version in that that Robin and most of his merry men perished in the end.
If Ridley Scott goes the route of having Robin perish then it will indeed be Gladiator 2. By the looks of this trailer it should prove to be pretty gritty.
Ha ha. I don’t think Ridley would be very happy to hear you think this looks like Kevin Costner’s Robin Hood, Andrew. My guess is it’ll probably be a lot like that Robin Hood, except suck a whole lot less.
“Unlike some other Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent.”
I don’t think the Costner version sucks at all. It is swashbuckling fun from yesteryear. Might sound cheesy, but it’s a good time in front of your screen. But then again, I really like Costner and Rickman.
And sorry guys, I just watched both trailers back to back. Watch without volume and they’re the same movie – complete with the slow motion arrow shot to cap it off. I don’t even think this new one is all that violent.
The trailers may look similar, but I still doubt the end results will be anything alike.
I like Prince of Thieves too in a fun but cheesy, Sunday afternoon TV sort of way. Alan Rickman is awesome, not big on Costner though, a bit bland and not even trying to be English!

could you imagine if they used the Bryan Adams song in this movie? that’d be amazing.
No one will top Rickman’s Prince John.

Gotta agree with you, Andrew – Alan Rickman destroys as the Sheriff.
1. The adventures of Robin Hood
2. Robin Hood: Men In Tights
3. Robin Hood: Prince of thieves

I like RH:POT too… there’s something just plain weird about it
