Ooh, good choices, Bob! Makes me want to see more of those Asian films I keep skipping. :) Gong Li and Maggie Cheung, though, I can already vouch for. Catherine Deneuve would make my list now. And I think Kate Winslet was #21.

I'd have to think harder to do a Top 20 Actors one, strangely, which was why I didn't do it at the time. The Characters one is interesting; I don't remember seeing that one. I did a "top fictional characters you'd do" meme one time on Livejournal. Heh. A lot of mine were from TV shows, though. And yes, you should repost the character one here! It'd be good discussion.

Ah, thanks for the info on Arsenic...I just looked at the date and knew he had done a whack of stuff during the war on the war. Didn't realize it had been filmed in 1941. Kinda makes more sense that way now...

Yep, I did that <a href="http://eternalsunshineofthelogicalmind.blogspot.com/2008/12/my-20-favourite-actresses.html" rel="nofollow">20 Favourite Actresses meme</a> as well. It pains me that I left Audrey Hepburn off - a serious faux pas. Not to mention Patricia Clarkson, Anna Karina (though I think that's more the lust talking), Teri Garr, etc., etc.

Did a <a href="http://eternalsunshineofthelogicalmind.blogspot.com/2008/12/my-20-favourite-actors.html" rel="nofollow">Top 20 Actors</a> and a <a href="http://eternalsunshineofthelogicalmind.blogspot.com/2009/04/favourite-movie-characters-meme.html" rel="nofollow">Top 20 characters</a> as well (it was supposed to be Top 10, but I cheated). Was considering re-using that last one here as a post to get some discussion going...

rot, I did like The White Ribbon. Although even there, I'm not sure "like" is the right word. I respected the hell out of it.

Henrik, thanks! I do quite enjoy Meet Me in St. Louis. But really, I also have difficulty with Day of Wrath (and I fear with Ordet) because I have difficulty in general with films about religious angst, especially ones that are as deliberately paced as Day of Wrath. My favorite part of the film was the beautiful tracking/panning shot as Anna crosses the room to hear the judgement on the old woman. I might like it better on rewatch, knowing what to expect.

I haven't seen Lion in Winter in years, but I really liked it when I saw it. I'm also a huge history buff, especially of early English history, so that probably plays into it.

Bob, actually, wasn't Arsenic and Old Lace filmed in 1941? If I recall correctly, it was held for release because the contract stipulated it couldn't be released until after the play closed on Broadway, and it ran much longer than anyone expected. I agree about Meet John Doe. Capracorn went off the rails with that one.

I agree with you about Bride & Prejudice. It's meant to be kind of a fusion of Bollywood and Hollywood styles, but full-on Bollywood is better. But it's still fun to watch.

And re: Stanwyck and Grahame. Permit me to link you to my 20 Favorite Actress entry from when that meme went around last year: http://www.the-frame.com/blog/2008/12/19/20-favorite-actresses/. Did you do that one? Both Stanwyck and Grahame are fairly high on my list. :)

I haven't seen Silent Light but I am interested.

"it has one of the most erotic scenes ever filmed – and it’s just a woman talking."

Both "Passion of Joan of Arc" and "Vampyr" are excellent. I was amazed at how inventive the camerawork was. I was going to say contemporary, but I expect that's just because so many people borrowed his ideas. I don't know if "Day of Wrath" and "Ordet" follow suit as I haven't seen them yet. Yeah, I need to fix that...

I think you'll like Liberty Vance as well Mike. It's not my fave Western, but it's solid in all aspects. The one thing that might catch some people is how "John Wayne" John Wayne is here. It's like the prototypical role for those looking to imitate him.

I like Arsenic and Old Lace a great deal. Capra is a mixed bag for me though. I winced through much of "Meet John Doe" - and if even Barbara Stanwyck can't save a film for me, you know your in trouble...Interesting that Capra did Arsenic right in the middle of a bunch of war time documentaries.

Persona is also amazing...Along with everything Jandy said, it has one of the most erotic scenes ever filmed - and it's just a woman talking.

I love Secretary as well, but it's not for everybody. Director Shainberg followed that up with Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus which I also really liked and which is also not for everybody...

I really wanted to like Bride and Prejudice more...Some scenes were great and some fell totally flat. It needed to be more Bollywood musical and less Hollywood romcom.

And finally, The Big Heat is pretty damn spiffy. Lee Marvin plays big dunderhead really well and wields a mean coffee pot. Gloria Grahame (my other major crush from that time period along with Stanwyck) is terrific too - just a simple raised eyebrow from Grahame can render me all jelly like...

I've seen The Man who shot Liberty Valance, and I predict that you will love it rot. I liked it quite a bit, though it felt a little too long. You're in for a real horse-opera.

The Lion in Winter sounds amazing, is it any good?

"I watched Day of Wrath a couple of years ago and found it rather tedious"

Well, he doesn't get more sassy in later years, might want to stick to Meet Me In St. Louis :).

I can't wait to see The White Ribbon.

Haneke's White Ribbon reminds me most of Dreyer's Ordet, so if you liked White Ribbon, perhaps you will like Ordet. Dreyer is an acquired taste, his pacing is deliberate, his theatrics elevated to 11, but what Dreyer I have seen I've enjoyed. That said, the best one to see Jandy is Jeanne D'Arc, the criterion version with the choir score.

quite possibly the best TCM schedule you've ever posted Jandy. I am determined to watch the Man Who Killed Liberty Valance on the saturday, a film I still haven't seen.

Also I really want to see Mr Deeds Goes to Town, a film I missed during the Dirty Thirties Marathon.

But one's I have seen that I can recommend:

Arsenic and Old Lace
The New World
Persona
Brief Encounter
Nights of Cabiria (I can't believe how often they play this)
Picnic at Hanging Rock
The Lives of Others
Ordet (those who love Silent Light ought to take some time to see Dreyer classic, outright steals elements from this film)
