I'm happy to say that the film gets even BETTER upon second viewing (To bask in the detail, both static and animated!). The kids were genuinely into it from beginning to end (5 and 6 years old), and all the 'relationship' and 'adult' dialogue ("Cluster-Cuss!") may probably have gone over their head, but the rhythm/cadence of the delivery is its own form of animation.

That is some of the best 'voice-acting'-to animation fits (Dafoe/Gambon/Clooney/Streep/Anderson/Wolodarski, even Owen Wilson) I've seen a while.

I did enjoy that review. But not as much as I enjoyed the delightful Mr. Fox.

My official favourite review of Mr. Fox (thanks to the Guardian for pointing this nutter out to me, Fiore Mastracci, who is on RottenTomatoes list of critics.) Mastracci's a 100%-brain-free version of Armond White!

I felt that the father/son stuff worked in the film, as well as the complicated relationship between Mr. & Mrs. Fox, particularly the line "I love you, but I should never have married you."

Finally caught this and thoroughly enjoyed it. I don't quite get your mention of emotional sucker punch in the film, to me it was all light and fun. Some jokes were over-used but I still love them (the possum eyes are classic).

I watched this film last night (in an empty theatre save a couple who were screen hopping and were shocked at what they hopped into) and loved it.

I really enjoyed the themes of wilderness, agriculture, industrialization and the eventual result of the mass commercial market. The film feels like a quirky retelling of the effects of the industrial revolution; migration from the country to the city, the technology's mastery over nature, the modern condition of placelessness, etc. I also like how the film plot begins with Fox trying to find a new 'natural' home and how that ambition ends with placelessness. The conceptual transition from natural settings to artificial environments was very pleasing to see on screen.

Yea, I at 85 minutes sans credits, you are right, the movie did feel a little long. That's OK though, I enjoyed immensely being immersed in that particular universe. I wouldn't say no to a sequel if Anderson feels he wants to go back to that world and make a follow up story without the help of the Dahl Novel.

It turns out a big chunk of the movie is add-on (not unlike the expansion of Where The Wild Things Are...)

I was one of the few unsure from the trailer and how the animation and voice casting would work out....

but I absolutely adored this movie, probably my fave Anderson flick since Royal Tenenbaums. I don't see how anyone could dislike it, but I"m sure someone will try very hard.

Gotta say though, Wes Anderson makes the world's longest 90 minute movies.
