Los Angeles is already a good spot to be for classic film lovers, and it’s about to get a little better. Turner Classic Movies is branching out from television and into the film festival world, planning a classic film festival in Hollywood for April 2010. It’s going to be taking over Grauman’s Egyptian and Chinese theatres, two of the most opulent movie palaces in existence – and with plenty of their own historic cache as well. The Chinese remains one of the most popular places for red carpet premieres (as well as tourists, with its sidewalk of star hand and footprints), and the Egyptian houses the American Cinematheque. There will also be screenings in the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel just down the street.
I don’t yet know what this is going to cost or what films will be included (the first of those questions should be answered on November 18th when passes go on sale), but the opportunity to see any of TCM’s vast library of films in venues like these is going to be amazing. I’ll be sure to share more details as they become available.
There’s a brief Robert Osbourne-narrated trailer for the festival here.
