As for Best Actress… almost certainly Emily Blunt for Young Victoria, because well she is playing a royal after all… but holy shit it is slim. I can’t even think of many actress lead performances at all, which is in stark contrast to the bumper crop last year.

Is Wendy and Lucy this year?

I don’t know why there are so few fantastic female performances this year. Maybe it’s due to that article I wrote last year about how the female presence/competition is always so intense and deep. I jinxed it. maybe we’ll see something good out of “Nine.”

      Penelope in Broken Embraces
      Marillon Cotillard in Public Enemies
      Ellen Page in Whip It
      Gainsbourg in Antichrist

Wow, looking at my list of movies this year, these are all I can come up with so far. And these are pretty thin choices. The article talks about the chick from Precious and Meryl Streep as probably shoe-ins. I guess I’ll have o wait for the Oscar bait movies in November and December to really see some performances from leading ladies deserving of an Oscar.

I definitely expect to see some love for PRECIOUS in the Actress & Supporting Actress roles. Perhaps NINE will also provide a nomination or two? And sadly, I can’t put my finger on any outstanding performances from earlier in the year. Will have to revisit the list of stuff seen.

Any thoughts on the young lady from IMAGINARIUM? I had some problems with the film but found her charming.

Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick both have shots at Supporting Actress for Reitman’s UP IN THE AIR.

And I think Mélanie Laurent should get some sort of nod, Best Actress or Best Supporting Actress for Inglourious Basterds…She is awesome in that film.

  4. Kurt Halfyard says:

…And I’ll be curious if the girl from Atonement gets a nod for THE LOVELY BONES if Jackson’s film squeaks out before Oscar time.

  5. Kurt Halfyard says:

Also, I’d offer Rachel Weisz in AGORA if that film got released here in time, which it will not….

  6. Kurt Halfyard says:

One more: I’d throw Gina McKee in IN THE LOOP up for a supporting nod. If only because I love her.
