Keep An Open Mind: VIFF 09 Trailers Are Weirdly Awesome

It's always "New Moon" day.

Over the years it’s become pretty clear that the Vancouver International Film Festival has fantastic promotional trailers. The festival went above and beyond last year with their attendee reels which told truths about festival goers in the most humorous ways. This year’s trailers are equally awesome but a tad more on the disturbing side of the fence. From strange film recommendations to subtitling, these are, again, genius, funny and a little wacky. Enjoy.

A few more tucked under the seat.

  1. Great. So much easier than trying to explain to everyone I meet how good the promos in Vancouver are :-) Thanks Marina for digging this up!

  2. I look forward to seeing what the new promos are going to be each year. They have some very creative people in VIFF.

  3. So has anyone got a translation of the actual dialogue for the “Maybe” quote in the subtitles trailer??

  4. I haven’t seen one but I’d also like to know what the card says. The search begins now!

  5. OK, to answer my own question, I’ve asked my Japanese roommate, and here is a rough translation of what the note says:

“I received/accept your offer/message. Friday night. Mizuho Building. Kamiosaki”

The girl’s response is essentially in line with the subtitle, without the mangled grammar.

    The man replies:

“Our plan has succeeded. They will never catch us. Never! Yuzu didn’t know that. We wait until Friday. We are are 100% safe! Will will run away, to the end of the earth!”

So as you can see, his response is clearly not “Maybe.”

    Hahahaha!
