I‘m wondering how Sam Worthington went from almost a complete unknown to a guy getting starring roles in projects like Terminator: Salvation, Avatar, a John Madden drama, and the upcoming Clash of the Titans remake, all within a relatively short span of each other. If he sold his soul to the devil, then sign me up, because even if he isn’t a household name yet, after Avatar and this potentially blockbuster remake, he’s going to be an international star.

In reality though, I never had much interest in this Clash of the Titans remake until I stumbled across the first images from the currently in-production movie over at Film Junk. The costume and character designs look really rad, especially the strange creates that Perseus (Sam Worthington) seems to be talking to in the photo above. It looks like they took a page out of Guillermo del Toro’s notebook. Besides that, the movie has a pretty stellar cast that includes Liam Neeson as Zeus, Ralph Fiennes as the villain Hades, as well as Danny Huston, Pete Postlethwaite, and Mads Mikkelsen in other supporting roles.

Director Louis Leterrier may not exactly inspire confidence, but he has filmed his fair share of action with Danny the Dog, Transporter 2, and Norton-starring The Incredible Hulk under his belt. He may be known as an action director, but he is also interested in the character of Perseus as well, having once gone on record saying that he was incredibly interested in filming the big monster fight at the end, but he was more interested in Perseus as “a conflicted hero” who hates every moment of his heroics.

Let’s just say that I’m all for a good, imaginative fantasy epic, which really, are few and far between it seems. Am I getting ahead of myself by letting these photos get my hopes up? What do you all think about all this?

More photos after the jump.

Given the source material is a wee bit older than Hollywood, I don’t consider this a remake *chuckle*

Neeson and Fiennes? SCHINDLER’S LIST 2?!?!?!

Well, the myth of Perseus and Medusa is obviously a classic tale, Michael, but obviously much of this particular story for Clash of the Titans and the title itself came from the writer of the ’81 movie, Beverley Cross (who also interestingly co-wrote Jason and the Argonauts). Which makes it a remake in my book.

I think this is like Schindler’s List 2 as well. Fiennes>Neeson, hopefully Hades will be fun.

Jason and the Argonauts I watched this year and it was a total 6/6 movie. Is Clash of the Titans as good as that?

Most people would probably agree that Jason and the Argonauts is the better movie, but it doesn’t mean that Clash of the Titans isn’t fun to watch. Some great stop-motion fights and Laurence Olivier as Zeus though!

I know I’m late to the game, but I think the climactic skeleton fight of Jason is one of the best pulled off visual effects sequences I have ever seen. I mean, this was something that had been hyped up to me, and I was excited to see, and it absolutely delivered. The physics were extraordinary, and the whole sequence was fucking amazing.

The 7th Voyage of Sinbad is a must as well Henrik if you are a fan of Jason & The Argonauts. And I think I actually like Clash of the Titans just a hint more. Gotta love the witches, mechanical owl, too much star power and the final Kraken sequence. Awesome Campy fun.
