Despite my pretty solid knowledge of classic (and terribly cheesy) horror movies, thanks to my hometown local movie store as youth where you could rent five horror movies for $3, I never got around to watching George Romero’s 1973 classic The Crazies, despite the fact that it was filmed very close to where I live. With that said, I have no connection to the original and it doesn’t make me stomp my feet in anger the way that the Halloween remake did.
The trailer for this remake does suck and follows all the tired horror movie trailer cliches, although Timothy Olyphant is da bomb diggity. Love that guy. What noticeably stands out though is the use of a certain iconic song that is very, very connected to another popular movie, which for me was a bit distracting, even if the lyrics were appropriate for what was happening on screen. It’s a February 26 release for this and I won’t be bothering with this one in theaters, but I’m sure it will be worth checking out for $1 in the Redbox on a lazy Tuesday night just to see Olyphant kick some ass.

Radha Mitchell and Timothy Olyphant. I’m in.
The last shot of this trailer is a huge spoiler.
I didn’t finish watching the trailer but did like what I saw. And as both Jonathan and Andrew note, Timothy Olyphant is the man. I’m game.
Olyphant’s “Family Circus” speech in GO made me notice him, but Deadwood certainly cemented him as awesome. However, this is just glossed up twaddle (just like the Dawn of the Dead remake, Excepting those fabulous opening and closing scenes that almost justify the movie).
Using the closing song from Donnie Darko is pretty damn inexcusably though. That’s like using Stuck in the Middle with You for a mediocre hostage movie like Suicide Kings, or using The End by the Doors in a war movie. (Or Kung Fu Fighting in any trailer involving, well, martial arts). It should not be allowed.
Someone should make a list of songs that have to be retired because they were simply used perfect in another film.
….When are we going to get that MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE remake. I’ll forgive using AC/DC on the soundtrack there. But only barely…
Timothy Olyphant is worth the price of admission on this one. The only movie of his not worth would have to be ‘Live Free or Die Hard’, but I think we can all forget the train wreck because of his work on Deadwood.
