• TIFF 09 Review: The Disappearance of Alice Creed

    Director: J Blakeson
    Writer: J Blakeson
    Producer: Adrian Sturges
Starring: Eddie Marsan, Martin Compston, Gemma Arterton
    MPAA Rating: NYR
    Running time: 98 min.

This will likely be the shortest review you will ever read at Row Three. It was made pretty clear at my screening to keep the wraps on fairly tight about what this movie is or isn’t. And since I agree whole heartedly with the sentiment, I will simply say that this was a sweet surprise feature with an excellent cast. An easily accessible film that takes a caper story and unpeels the layers of revelation with pleasant surprise and perfect timing. The less you know, the better, but suffice it to say that you’ll be thrilled and entertained like few films of this ilk are able to pull off. To say more would just spoil things. But…

I will say that Marsan (one of our picks for a best performance in 2008) and quickly rising star, Martin Compston, have fantastic chemistry and keep the tension and anticipation ratcheted up with their unique roles and performances. Both were gracious and friendly at the Q&A forum and in the reception line following the film. The film deserves a following and I’m convinced once word gets out, that following will happen.

Look for The Disappearance of Alice Creed when and where you can. Enjoy.

FINALLY saw this last night. I love that you don’t go into the details and I’m amazed I managed to go nearly a year without spoiling it for myself. Awesome. Opens in a bunch of Canadian cities this weekend – definitely worth checking out!
