Earlier in the week WTLTE brought my attention to Gentlemen Broncos by posting some viral videos of Dr Ronald Chevalier in action. I was curious about the film though admittedly, the fact that it’s directed by Jared Hess had me a little worried.

Napoleon Dynamite was funny for about 5 minutes and Nacho Libre wasn’t much better but I will give Hess this: his films have a unique look and feel to them that is a little alien. Are they modern or set in the 80s? It’s like a timeless vacuum of a world and it works for the characters he creates.

The trailer for Gentlemen Broncos has now arrived and it has alleviated some of my concerns though I’m still on the fence. The film stars Jemaine Clement as Dr. Chevalier, an established science fiction author who has run out of ideas. He stumbles on a story called “Broncos” which was written by a home schooled teenaged fan of his (Michael Angarano), and doing what any desperate writer would do, he makes a few changes and turns it into a best seller. The rest is pretty obvious but what isn’t is the way in which it unfolds.

I have a feeling sci-fi fans will love Hess’ film which looks like it will provide fantastic 80s style, ubber cheese sci-fi moments while I’m quietly crossing my fingers that I can sit through it without chucking popcorn at the screen. It certainly looks like it could be a winner if it manages to strike the right cheeseball balance.

Gentlemen Broncos opens on August 30th.
