It just seems over the past decade the fact that Gilliam cares more about production design really shows. As much as I’ve loved so many of his films, I think he’d be better off quitting directing and just being kick ass at the production/visual side for someone else.

The only issue I hade with the Brothers Grimm is the shoddy CGI. Other than that it’s a decent adventure film. (but certainly the the most bland of Gilliams movies)

The cast is great. Johnathon Pryce, Peter Stormare and Lena Headey are all in it as well. Problem is the story is a bit of a mess and it struggles with its high concept. It doesn’t help that the film was notorious for MGM wresting control from Gilliam throughout the production.

I still enjoy watching it, but it is easily Gilliam’s weakest film.

Despite liking Matt Damon and Terry Gilliam (and Monica Bellucci), I never managed to get around to BROTHERS GRIMM, I guess I will eventually, but it just looked, sound and the overall buzz around it screamed “Mediocre”.

Are their any passionate defenders of GRIMM who can make a case to watch the film?

As much as I disliked TIDELAND, I do recommend folks to watch it and judge for itself, it is a strange film that really, really splits audiences.

Skipped Tideland. Last Gilliam I watched was Brothers Grimm, which I think I turned off half an hour in.

You say brilliant. I say Ick-y, and a tad lazy in the narrative dept. and grotesque in not a good way (a la Bridges/Tilley in the opener). Tideland left a bad taste in my mouth. (http://twitchfilm.net/archives/003467.html)

The only film that he has made that I didn’t like was TIDELAND, I can take or leave a few, but Brazil/TimeBandits/Dr.Munchausen has earned Gilliam a free-pass for life as far as I’m concerned.
