As you guys enjoyed “In the loop” so much, I’d strongly urge you all to check out “Thick of it”, which is the small screen version (by the BBC). I’d say that the Malcolm Tucker character is even funnier in some of the TV episodes, and the script (and swearing!) are just as good overall.

I cannot believe the way Matt is describing $9.99 as something esoteric and thoughtful, I caught it at TIFF and my main criticism of the film was how little it left for thought, how much it was obvious in its wrought attempts to be meaningful. It reminded me of a Jeremy Podeswa film, calculating pathos.

    • Andrew James says:

Haven’t seen $9.99, but I know a lot of critics said the same thing about Syncdoche, NY – that it was just trying so damn hard to appear insightful when in fact it’s just Kaufman being weird. Maybe that is your perspective of $9.99?

I didn’t say that, “they” did. “They” talk a lot don’t they?

  3. Goon says:

I knew without checking the TF review was 3.5/5

I just wanted to throw in that I agreed with Matt’s review, and thought Funny People was pretty astounding, especially with the meta levels attached to it. Very dark, not all that funny but amusing and entertaining to be sure. Overall very personal, and its a 4/5 from me but I admire it on a full 5/5 scale :P

So Gamble & Goon, better or worse than ADVENTURELAND?

(p.s. Gamble & Goon could be like a late 1980s era FM Radio Morning show…)

  5. Goon says:

Oh Adventureland is absolutely a better film, and in fact Adventureland is still my favorite of 09. I dont think Funny People is even on my top ten of the year so far.

But its still quite good, and I think some of the bad reviews or disappointments are very much akin to Adventureland having some people let down because it wasn’t Superbad 2.

It deserves more consideration than you gave it on the show, Kurt, thats for sure. I think it would make an excellent double bill with the Jerry Seinfeld documentary “Comedian”.

  6. Rusty James says:

I have decided that now is a good time to reveal that Matt Gamble and I are the same person. I apologize for the elaborate deception but it seemed like a good idea at the time.

From now on you can just refer to me as Rusty Gamble.

  7. Kurt Halfyard says:

Yea, me and Apatow simply don’t mix too well. I guess I liked Superbad and 40 year old virgin well enough, the rest cannot muster enthusiasm to go to the cinema. I accidently find them on DVD eventually. I’ve not seen COMEDIAN either.

  8. Goon says:

Well maybe you’ll like this one, because you’ll be able to use the word “Pathos” when you review it afterward. We all know how much you love to get to use that word. :D

  9. Rusty James says:

Goon, you’ve got to sweeten the pot. Throw in “fetishize” and a weird pronounciation of Aptow and you’ve got yourself a deal.

  10. Kurt says:

also: Plethora. Fascist. Implacable. Pseudo- and retroactively

    (I know my pet-words)

  11. Goon says:

Don’t forget meta! You could use that one too.

And it would have to be referred to as “Judd Apatow’s 2009 film” rather than just calling it “Funny People”

  12. Goon says:

Also maybe throw in an “ugly american” somewhere.

  13. Rusty James says:

He’s gonna sit down with Judd App-toe’s 2009 film.

  14. Goon says:

Kurt, is In the Loop actually playing in Toronto or did you find it through nefarious means? I dont see it anywhere.

  15. Matt Gamble says:

Superbad was not directed by Apatow film.
