• Arthur to Return. Thanks Warren Ellis.

Arthurian legend? Yes please. For years I mainlined anything I could get my hands on. From “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” to the not-so-great The Last Legion. It’s safe to say that I’m a fan and when it comes to Arthurian Legend, for me at least, it doesn’t get much better than John Boorman’s 1981 classic Excalibur.

Aside from Antoine Fuqua’s King Arthur and the currently running “BBC Merlin” (which I haven’t seen but have heard nothing but good things about), Arthurian legend seems to have dried up. The Lady of the Lake needs to get on that ASAP. And it looks like she’s taken my plea to heart because a post from a well known name is, I hope, about to refill the well.

In his two sheets to the wind sort of way, writer extraordinare Warren Ellis has announced that he’s working on a new untitled “Arthurian Project” while joking, very realistically, that on the desk of the studio, it’s titled Excalibur. That’s kind of awesome. Not that it’s a remake but the fact that they’ve got Ellis behind the script. Oh yeah, and apparently this script is for the people who made 300. Not sure it’s safe to assume this will be in the same visual vein as 300 but I think there’s a good possibility it might be. I’m sure Kurt’s already turning in his chair.

Wonder who we can get to play Arthur next. I like Clive Owen’s take and wouldn’t mind seeing him reprise the role. And what are the chances Guinevere will be less a damsel in distress and more of a player in the game? I guess it all depends on the politics of the story and what aspect they’re focusing on. Fingers crossed for kick-ass warrior queen.

    And because it’s totally awesome…

  1. Mercurie says:

Like you, I am an Arthurian freak, so this is good news. I’m thinking Warren Ellis should produce something a lot better than Antoine Fuqua’s King Arthur.

BTW, they are showing Merlin here in the States on NBC (which shocked me–the commercial networks generally don’t show series from Britain). It is actually very well done and quite entertaining.

  2. I’ve seen it advertised on one of the local stations but still haven’t seen it. Will have to catch up with it via PVR.

And I have quite the soft spot for Fuqua’s Arthur. It’s not the best I’ve seen but I did enjoy it a great deal. It may have something to do with the cast. The wicked, wicked cast.
