Just saw this posted over at Twitch by our good friend (and Movie Club Regular) Swarez. Now I know that Marina is all gushy about the girliness of Twilight and its ugly and ungainly film, but even she should be pissed off that Lionsgate has taken the mighty Katheryn Bigelow vampire flick Near Dark and repackaged it for the Twi-hards. Right in the midst of Bigelow’s apparent return to form with The Hurt Locker. Actually it might be amusing to see a lot of confused fans see Bill Paxton slice a barkeeps throat open with a spur and offer the spillings to his co-horts in beer steins. But no, I’m still seeing red that one of the best vampire films of the last 25 years is being smeared as a DTV-rip-off of the Twilight vanilla sapiness.
What’s next, Let The Right One In with terrible subs, er, no wait a minute, that’s already happened, how about releasing LTROI with the TrueBlood cover. Lets let all the awful yet successful vampire bits of pop culture subvert and uglify the gems, shall we?
Grrr. Am I over reacting to this? Should I merely get a chuckle out of this marketing idiocy or be thankful that some people will ‘accidently’ see a good vampire movie? This move positively reeks of Weinstein-style get the sale but piss off the customer false advertising.

It’s TRUE. Thought I’m not so angry as CONFUSED. If they *really* think this is going to sell the movie to the Twihards, they have something else coming to them. Word will get out that this vastly superior film is nothing like Twilight and there will be a revolt. Probably not but I doubt sales will be thrilling.
That said, I’m VERY HAPPY to see it get a new release. There’s a 2 disc special edition that was released years ago on DVD which I can’t find anywhere (I even considered not returning it to the local video store and paying through the nose for it) so I’m happy to see that it’s getting a new treatment. Wonder if it’s a single disc edition or the 2 disc I’m pining after…

I love both these films but think its so stupid how they have made it to look just like twilight. The people who designed the new poster for near dark have certainly not watched the film as for one she is blonde, she is the vamp not him where they have made him look like the vamp and whats with his eyes?? caleb didnt have golden eyes
