• Trailer: The Pacific

If for some reason you have not yet watched the 2001 mini-series Band of Brothers, well, get off your ass and go rent and/or buy it. It’s the greatest achievement in cinema as far as recreating the American perspective of World War II and I think most people that have watched it in its entirely would be in agreement.

Needless to say, I’ve been pretty excited to see more about the next great WWII mini-series that, like Band of Brothers, is produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. The fight in the Pacific was just as fascinating and frightening as that in Europe, but has largely been forgotten when it comes to Hollywood and American history high school curriculum. Hopefully, much like Band of Brothers did, this will shed a little light on this often overlooked part of the war and open some eyes to the horrors that happened, especially in a time when another catastrophic war seems like it could be so close. Yes, Hollywood and video games and books are oversaturated with World War II stories, but I don’t think anyone is going to mind when it comes to this mini-series. Here’s the synopsis via Coming Soon:

The miniseries tracks the intertwined odysseys of three U.S. Marines – Robert Leckie (played by James Badge Dale), Eugene Sledge (Joe Mazzello) and John Basilone (Jon Seda) – across the vast canvas of the Pacific. The extraordinary experiences of these men and their fellow Marines take them from the first clash with the Japanese in the haunted jungles of Guadalcanal, through the impenetrable rain forests of Cape Gloucester, across the blasted coral strongholds of Peleliu, up the black sand terraces of Iwo Jima, through the killing fields of Okinawa, to the triumphant, yet uneasy, return home after V-J Day.

The video is down but it looked amazing when I watched it while it was still up.
