• Little Known Fact: Online Casinos Are Trouble

Leonardo DiCaprioI thought the poker movie was dead. Did we learn nothing from the flops of Deal, Lucky You and 21? I think that last one was moderately successful but a complete load of poop. Alas, the movie making continues as do movies about gambling; this one at least has something good going for it.

Written by Brian Koppelman and David Levien who had previous success in this sub-genre with 1998s Rounders, the duo have a new film about online casinos who operate out of Costa Rica. The film is still untitled and that tidbit of information is all Variety has on the project but I’m willing to bet that the film will include some sort of investigation into the shenanigans of online gambling and perhaps even a tie to local organized crime with an American FBI agent on track to solve the mystery. So that might be the straightforward approach but I’m going to give Koppelman and Levien the benefit of the doubt and guess that they may have something a little more dramatic up their sleeves.

To further support this idea that there may be more than the straightforward investigation angle at play is the fact that Leonardo DiCaprio is attached to star in the film. Alright, so this fact doesn’t say much for the film either way but it brings a little more attention to the project.

Can’t say I’m exactly excited; it’s too early to tell. I’m sure things will get a little clearer once we get a title, a more in-depth plot description and, oh yeah!, a director.

I think in the end, Rounders found its audience, but was far from a successful film at the Box Office, and it pre-dated the Texas Hold’em craze by a couple years. It’s not a great film, but has its moments. I prefer Dahl’s Red Rock West and The Last Seduction. The dude can make a very good film in a more old-fashioned style.

Did anyone catch YOU KILL ME? – it has a fabulous cast but practically went straight to DVD (something most of Dahl’s films have sadly done). Dude has been mainly doing Dexter, Battlestar Galactica and True Blood episodes, but he’d be better doing cinema, eh?

I did see You Kill Me and I thought it was pretty great. Kingsley was surprisingly controlled and Leone was excellent. Overall an enjoyable hired killer comedy.

And looking at his filmograpy, I liked Joy Ride too. Also not spectacular but solid thriller.
