I would partially agree that Third Man is a bit overrated as a classic, but in the end I enjoy it, almost incidentally to its story. I love Vienna, the zither music, the performances, the stark black and white visuals, specific scenes like the end and the great ferris wheel speech.

Third Man also reminds me of one of my biggest movie pet peeves. Inappropriate billing. Orson Welles is first billed on this thing even though he's barely in it and doesn't show up until an hour into the movie.

Imagine if they had put Kevin Spacey's name and image on the poster for Seven? Would kind of take away from the mystery, yes?

The worst though for me is still the star salad all over the poster for Thin Red Line even though most of them do nothing and Clooney isn't there until the last 5 minutes.

"Third Man is directed by Carol Reed."

Where did I ever say Welles directed it?

I agree The Third Man is shit, and that Double Indemnity and M are good, especially M, one of my favorite films.

@ I’ve now seen two Orson Welles “classics” in a row where I was rooting against the main character.

Third Man is directed by Carol Reed.

In summation.

The movie is just plain shallow. If Star Trek had nothing to chew on but popcorn, the Third Man has nothing to chew on but scenery.

I watched the Third Man today, finally. 2.5/5

Yup, one of the all time "greats", Roger Ebert's favorite movie which he has seen over 50 times, has great shot after great shot, and a decent but overhyped monologue, but otherwise is not that mysterious, not at all thrilling, with bland dialogue and an idiotic main character in Holly who I couldn't think less of. Meh.

I hate it when certain great looking old films get added to these all time lists simply by virtue of being great looking and old, when their story isn't even better than most lame thrillers that get put out today. Noir movies like Double Indemnity and M aren't just good for their time, they are just plain good and actually thrilling, at best the Third Man is merely good for its time.

And I hate that with this and Othello, I've now seen two Orson Welles "classics" in a row where I was rooting against the main character.

rot, that's what DVRs and/or VCRs are for. ;)

I need to try to catch The Wages of Fear again. I wasn't all that impressed by it the first time around. Too much testosterone, maybe? I liked Les Diaboliques better.

Henrik, heh, I was a bit surprised to see Spielberg, too. He's a little outside of TCM's usual range. But if they're doing this for all of June, they have to find 30 directors whose films they have the rights to, I guess. On Stagecoach, I'll have to put it down for a rewatch, too. I mostly remember the character interactions, but it is a John Ford film, so I'm sure the action sequences are amazing as well.

sunday 10am, anyone that has any interest in cinema needs to catch Clouzot's Wages of Fear, awesome film that trumps Hitchcock at suspense.

Thurs June 4th Nights of Cabiria!!!! Fellini's finest film, people watch this!

Sucks that Arsenic and Old Lace is on at 2:30am! I'm dying to rewatch that.

So TCM - Great Director has Bergman on it, I'm thinking nice, this station is good. Then they have Spielberg on it? Whatever.

All Bergmans movies are Must-Sees. And the most memorable part of Stagecoach is the mindblowing action sequences, not the characters. John Wayne rules the screen in that one.
