• Another Reboot: Buffy

buffy_stabBuffy fans are a legion of the highest order that I believe might even conquer the strength of the Brown Coats. Though let’s be honest, most of these fans would have a hard time deciding which faction to side with as most are simply in default Joss Whedon mode; as I am. Point is, fans have been clamoring for more Buffy since the show went off the air (with a bang) quite a few years back. But would they want more Buffy with the caveat that there would be no Joss Whedon involved and (probably) no cast members from the original show on board either? Speaking only for myself, I can say yes.

Word around the campfire is that original Buffy the Vampire Slayer film creator, Fran Rubel Kuzui and her husband Kaz Kuzui want to re-energize the franchise with a relaunch (or reboot or re-imagining – whatever the kids are calling it these days). In other words, this would be a launch from the beginning and would not involve any story arc from the show or original movie (no Willow, no Angel, no Spike, etc.). I think most fans want a spin-off from the TV show that would bring everyone back one last time. I can empathize with that notion, but since we’ve been told time and time again from Joss, Gellar, et. al. that that is never going to happen, then I’ll take my slayer any way I can get her. If that means rebooting the franchise and going in new directions, I’m all for it.

What do you think? Should we have a reboot of the Buffy franchise or leave where it is, in the ground.

    NOPE.

The movie was kind of campy fun, but the series was what Joss wanted in the first place before the Kuzuis mangled his script. I’ll admit to being a rabid Whedonite, but I don’t want them touching it again. If they do, they ought to call it something different. Because it won’t be Buffy. It’ll be some other girl who’s a vampire slayer.

I don’t see anything wrong with the original Buffy movie. It’s not great art but I have fun watching it.

And Jandy’s right – this will likely end up completely different from Whedon’s vision of the character.

  3. Andy says:

I think they should reboot it and get Christian Bale to play Buffy.

  4. Jonas says:

    No.

No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No.

    *gasps for air*

No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No.

    No.

    NO!!

  5. Marina Antunes says:

Hoarse voice? No thanks. Though it would be funny…

  6. Jonas says:

    Huh, I guess I couldn’t just post a bunch of NO’s as a comment.

This is horrible news. Whedon is what made Buffy great.. the original idea is pretty lame in itself. Whedon made it the best thing ever. It’s probably the best show I’ll ever see, like ever. (my personal opinion of course)

    God damn!! No.

This is worse news than that OldBoy remake by Spielberg starring will smith. And that is pretty horrible news.

And here I was thinking Whedons buffy was a darker version of the movie. *sigh*

Hm… I don’t know guys. I’m a big Whedon Buffy fan, but I wouldn’t mind another version of Buffy the Vampire slayer. It could be made in a Russ Meyers sort of way or they could go really dark and nasty. There are lots of ways this film could turn out awesome.

  7. Jonas says:

Oh and there’s my NO comment.. Sorry about that guys.

  8. Marina Antunes says:

I’m sticking with Jonas on this one. Without Whedon I think Buffy would have been a disaster from the get go. Can you really even call it Buffy if he’s not involved? Just call it something else already. We all know it’s going to be nothing like the Buffy we already know and the character is so hugely known it doesn’t make any sense to keep the name if you’re not keeping with the character as she currently stands.

  9. Russ Meyer version? No thanks to that.

I love the Joss Whedon vision of Buffy. He brought us years of enjoyment with the series and really made a huge difference bringing horror mainstream (again) and provided us with fantastic characters and dialogue.

But, I’m up for a reboot. The possibility of having another strong female character in the horror world is something I’m always up for. Always. And enough time has passed that it could appear to a new generation.

We’ll always have the Buffy DVDs and if the reboot sucks we can all complain later, but I’m all for giving it a shot.

    • Andrew James says:

What if they made a Buffy movie that was actually scary. Like true horror show style. Whedon Vampires were laughable and just there for fun. If they made a really scary, bump in the night kind of thing (like Underworld style) it could be fun.

But hey, I understand where the Whedon purists are coming from.

  10. Going for actual horror, instead of comedy set in a horror scenario, would be interesting as well. Not sure if that would have as much fan cross over love – but doesn’t seem like they have that card yet :(

  11. Marina Antunes says:

And I’m all for the truly horrific vampire but then why bother calling it Buffy?

  12. Mercurie says:

    In one word, NO!!!!!

  13. Wouldn’t Josh Whedon need to sign off on this? He owns the rights, yes?

The… displeasure… he showed after signing off on letting the original film be made without his hand in it leads me to believe he would not do so again.

  14. good gods, give us ability to edit our own posts… Joss… how embarrassing.

  15. Andy says:

Seriously, though. If you put a wig on Christian Bale, the possibilities of this franchise are endless…

  16. Jandy Stone says:

As far as I know, the Kuzuis own the rights. They’re exec producers on the whole series as well as the original film. But Joss obviously has a huge hand in everything and a huge stake (pun intended) in the Buffy universe, and he did write the original script, so maybe he’s at least a partial rights-holder? I’m not sure how much either Joss or the Kuzuis can do without the other’s consent.

  18. Jonas says:

I’m guessing Whedon only has the rights to the stuff connected to the show, like Xander, Spike and Giles etc.. the Kuzuis can probably use everything that was used in the original movie.

But is Buffy really a good foundation for something dark and serious for mainstream audiences? It’s about a cheerleader named BUFFY that battles vampires in high school.. Seriously?

The whole point was that it was a ridiculous premise with a silly name to lure in viewers into a show that is funny, but also really mature and serious.

The only reason it worked was because of Whedons amazing ability to fuse real funny humor, super serious drama and action. It’s a stupid idea with a silly name that only worked because of its multi-part structure in the hands of Whedon.

Aaanyway.. How about Bale as Buffy and Johnny Depp as her watcher? And maybe a CGI’d Heath Ledger as the Master?

  19. Marina Antunes says:

Well if that’s the case, I expect we’re in for Michael Bay’s “BUFFY”.
