    Nine Movie Still

Musicals were never my thing. I liked a few here and there and was often surprised when I stumbled on a classic I liked (I blame it on the spontaneous singing) but I’ve come to realize that when I need a boost, a good musical really lifts my spirits. The last few years has provided a little resurgence and though not all of the recent musicals have been great, I’ve enjoyed myself at all of them (the ones I’ve seen at least) but here comes one that could not just be fun but has potential to catch some critical attention.

Directed by musical man Rob Marshall, Nine is based on a script written by Federico Fellini and Ennio Flaiano (that alone is quality) and features a famous film director struggling to find a balance between his career and his personal life. Alright, so this doesn’t really do anything for me but check out this loaded cast: Daniel Day-Lewis as director Guido Contini, Marion Cotillard as his wife, Penélope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson, Judi Dench and Sophia Loren. Can you say awesome?

The first teaser has hit the webs and though it doesn’t give much of the story, it does share some of the visuals and it sure looks nice (granted, all of Marshall’s films look good). Here’s hoping the music to match is catchy (this trailer music is certainly setting a nice precedent). I’m ready for another dose of musical goodness.

    Nine opens on November 25th.

I love musicals to a possibly unhealthy degree. I hope this one turns out decent – the trailer looks good, though yeah, not much on the story side. From the description and the Fellini connection, I’m thinking maybe sort of 8 1/2, but with musicals? Hope they don’t tone down the Fellini-ness of it, which looks like it could come through fairly well from the trailer.

    And the cast, well. Geez.

Wow, that looks gorgeous – and I mean beyond the obvious. I am now really looking forward to this and musicals are not really my thing generally.

Cruz obviously always has my money but it would be an understatement and a half to say this cast is high caliber.

    sold.
