• Miike Takes on Samurai

Takashi MiikeWhat kind of weird and wacky samurai film is in store for us next? With Takashi Miike at the helm, anything is possible.

Turns out that Miike has acquired funding for a new project based on Eiichi Kudo’s 1960’s classic Thirteen Assassins which follows a group of, you guessed it, assassins on a secret mission to take out an evil lord who rapes and kills a woman and then covers it up.

I’ve not sent he original (I’m grossly uneducated when it comes to Samurai films) but this sounds fantastic . That said, I’m not quite sure how fans of the genre and this particular film but will feel about the whole thing. I’m only familiar with some of Miike’s later works and for the most part, they’ve all been thoroughly enjoyable if a little off the wall. What does that mean for this story?

It doesn’t sound like this is as much a remake as it is a take on the story and for all I know, Miike’s version will be unrecognizable compared to the original but I have to say that either way, new Miike is enough to perk me up. I may not always like (or fully understand) what he’s getting at but his films are always a deviation from the norm and fun to watch.
