Anyone interested in another Robin Hood? Will there be that silly accent hubbub that seemed to accompany the one from the early 1990s that is notable not because of its lead, but because of Alan Rickman as the enjoyably flabbergasted villain. Russel Crowe puts on the tights to follow the footsteps of Douglas Fairbanks, Errol Flynn, Richard Greene, Frank Sinatra (albeit in pin-stripes), John Cleese, Kevin Costner, and a very underrated Patrick Bergin (who had Uma Thurman as his Maid Marian.) Ridley Scott is directing, and the while filming is currently underway, the film is more than a year away; yet we still may see this before The Road (just kidding).

Good call on Patrick Bergin, that may be my fave version of the story.
I’ll see this because of Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe, not because of the story, it’s never one that has really pulled me in.
does that look awkward to anyone else?
I love the Robin Hood mythology. This picture scares me a little though. Crowe is a bit overrated me thinks and ralph’s “awkward” comment above fits the picture.
As for the Costner version, I like it a lot. Not only is Rickman fucking awesome but it also includes some other great character actors. Not the least of which of course is Michael Wincott (who should be in 10x more films).
Andrew….Can we get married? If you tell me you like Waterworld too, I’ll be on the next flight.
Marina, I wish you were able to be on Netflix, because I would love to see what our compatibility score is. I have 5 friends on there right now and we’re all in the 70% range. Except for Adam Kempenaar (Filmspotting); he and I are at 85%. I bet you and I would come close to the 90-95% range.
i.e. match made in heaven. I think your current betrothed might take exception to that however.
Oh him. Yeah, forgot about the Transformers loving man I live with. It’s not all bad, the beautiful man is pretty much an open slate when it comes to seeing something off the wall. You’re the back-up husband. LOL
Costner is a bad actor. just bad. he’s like the boring science teacher that puts everyone to sleep when he acts. but one that I can’t help but like and i have no idea why.
“but one that I can’t help but like and i have no idea why.”
Because he’s awesome. You don’t have to be a great actor to be awesome. You just have to be awesome. Costner gets a bad rap no matter how many great movies he’s in:
A Perfect World
Bull Durham
Dances w/ Wolves
Open Range
For Love of the Game
Thirteen Days
JFK
Wyatt Earp
Robin Hood
Field of Dreams
Silverado
Untouchables
I even like his more genre-like stuff (Waterworld, Postman, 3000 Miles to Graceland).
Oh, and while I didn’t love Mr. Brooks, I liked the idea of it quite a bit.
i second the fact that Costner has been in some great movies, but he is still a bad actor. while i like him, i do wonder how he became so successful.
i think this Robin Hood movie is going to be sweet by the way. even if their last outing together (A Good Year) sucked!!
Huh. I wonder why they decided not to give Robin Hood long locks. Or at least somewhat longer. I’m indifferent but leaning towards optimistic until I see more.
I find it hard to root against Ridley and Russell – even after the debacle that was A Good Year (and what a debacle that was).
the thing is, andrew, he is in movies where he probably SHOULD be a good actor. cool actors like Arnold and Stallone never needed to be good actors because they weren’t parts that demanded it. Costner stars in roles that are complex and written for a good actor, and he stinks it up, but i still like him.
Official synopsis:
Oscar winner Russell Crowe stars as the legendary figure known by generations as “Robin Hood,” whose exploits have endured in popular mythology and ignited the imagination of those who share his spirit of adventure and righteousness. In 13th century England, Robin and his band of marauders confront corruption in a local village and lead an uprising against the crown that will forever alter the balance of world power. And whether thief or hero, one man from humble beginnings will become an eternal symbol of freedom for his people.
The untitled Robin Hood adventure chronicles the life of an expert archer, previously interested only in self-preservation, from his service in King Richard’s army against the French. Upon Richard’s death, Robin travels to Nottingham, a town suffering from the corruption of a despotic sheriff and crippling taxation, where he falls for the spirited widow Lady Marion (Oscar winner Cate Blanchett), a woman skeptical of the identity and motivations of this crusader from the forest. Hoping to earn the hand of Maid Marion and salvage the village, Robin assembles a gang whose lethal mercenary skills are matched only by its appetite for life. Together, they begin preying on the indulgent upper class to correct injustices under the sheriff.
With their country weakened from decades of war, embattled from the ineffective rule of the new king and vulnerable to insurgencies from within and threats from afar, Robin and his men heed a call to ever greater adventure. This unlikeliest of heroes and his allies set off to protect their country from slipping into bloody civil war and return glory to England once more.
